Splendid Waxcap - Hygrocybe splendidissima

This beautiful European waxcap, Hygrocybe splendidissima (Hygrophoraceae), is not only beautiful for its intense color, it also smells like honey when dry. This species is considered edible in some places.

Splendid Waxcap - Hygrocybe splendidissima

As its common and species name suggest, Hygrocybe splendidissima (Hygrophoraceae) is a splendid, big red mushroom, which can be found in Europe. This species can be distinguished from the Crimson Waxcap, Hygrocybe punicea, by its dry cap and the smell of honey that is given off when the fruitbodies are dried.

Splendid Waxcap

Hygrocybe splendidissima (Hygrophoraceae), the Splendid Waxcap, is one of the most often-misidentified of all the waxcaps, however, it can be distinguished from the similar Crimson Waxcap, Hygrocybe punicea, by its dry cap and the smell of honey that is given off when the fruitbodies are dried.

This species has also a flattened, twisted stem (with a figure of 8 cross section) which is a characteristic of the rare Splendid Waxcap.

This species is native to England and Ireland.
