@splendidpuffings eplied to your post “ppl on the forums r like “ye the previous version on the Sylvari was...”
Yep they are not elves. Their rules/culture/chivalry etc are based on human/centaur/ (ahem) dragon values and as such are almost parodies of them, in much the same way children play dress up. So the sylvari I think are about to grow up.
this is a late reply but mhm mhm
HoT is going to be basically sylvari puberty and im very enthusiastic about it.
as cute as sylvari being all chivalrous is, their society has really just been riding the coattails of ventari and the humans and the whole ~love n light~ shit. even the nightmare court tends to have a lot of chivalry stuff; just look at their titles and how they organize themselves.
i'm really ready for the sylvan race to finally go through some trials and develop an actual unique backbone and culture for themselves. even if they stay fairly chivalrous and naive-seeming (im expecting the latter trait to drop after HoT), this huge reveal is going to permanently change how they carry themselves and how they interact with the outside world and of course the dynamics between their factions.
i'm not terribly certain what direction anet's really going to go with them other than that obvious massive mordremoth vs pale tree faction divide and then of course suddenly having all of tyria be hostile to them, but im glad that its going to be a given that both sylvari and the other races will have it hammered into them that sylvari are rogue dragonspawn who are fuckin terrifying at their core bc that is my aesthetic right there.
i have high expectations for HoT and i hope that anet delivers because im going to be watching this all unfold really intensely. i normally dont like holding anet to a high standard because i know they tend to have problems delivering since they're constantly learning and evolving as a company AND gw2 is f2p so that can affect content and quality, but as of late they've been really trying to show that they can be serious and deliver very intense and to be honest expensive looking content. so this time around im actually setting the bar high for them, and if they reach it i will be enthralled, and if they go over it then i don't know what i'll do. die, maybe. but reaching this high bar of mine is what i'm really wanting them to do with HoT, regardless of however they plan to try and reach it i guess.
additionally am hoping this "sylvari r not elves" hammering will get through to all the "i used to roleplay a terrible blood elf on wow but migrated to gw2 where now i roleplay a shitty sylvari who i try to make act like a belf despite being a walking collection of leaves aka not a fucking belf" rpers and they'll go off and resign themselves to weird human rp in the ossan tavern or something.
at the very least i hope it makes people stop thinking that sylvari are all annoying and naive and "innocent precious flower nerd babbus"
