Reclaimed Wood and Its Benefits
What is Reclaimed Wood?
Reclaimed wood is wood, which has been previously used in the building of another structure and which when disassembled, is recycled and re-used.
To simplify, it is basically recycling and subsequent re-using of the same wood.
Today, many varieties of wood, which were freely available and abundant, are in short supply. Some of them have even become extinct, for all intents and purposes and are unavailable for commercial use. However, there is an alternate supply of wood in the form of reclaimed timber.
Where to Get the Reclaimed Wood From
Lumber can be reclaimed from a diverse range of sources, given below
1. The most common source of reclaimed wood is old buildings including barns, factories and warehouses. This timber is mostly in sizable pieces, making the wood more flexible for future uses.
2. Lumber can be sourced from railway sleepers, fences and even storage vessels like wine barrels and beercasks.
3. Timber can be reclaimed from old shipping pallets, which are usually made from exotic hardwoods.
4. Timber can also be recovered, rather than reclaimed, from trees which have toppled over, died naturally or fallen into rivers.
Benefits of Using Reclaimed Wood
1. Using reclaimed wood helps to preserve forests by reducing the need for virgin timber.
2. Processing this wood has less impact on the environment then felling, transportation and processing new lumber.
3. Reclaimed wood is more durable and less prone to warping and splitting.
4. Reclaimed wood is more stable.
5. No two pieces of reclaimed wood are identical and therefore, each crafted product has its own depth and unique character.
At Splinterd, we know the importance and benefits of using reclaimed wood and this has helped us in giving each one of our product a unique and distinct look. Find out more about us at www.Splinterd.com.
Wood Sanding a Perfect Idea to get desirable wood
Wood is a soft and porous material and this allows us to stain it according to our requirements. But, it is also the reason why wood can get easily scratched and dented. If we don’t sand the wood properly, these dents and scratches absorb more stain and can appear even worse.
A light sanding not only smoothes down the rough wood, but it also opens the pores so that we can achieve the color we want.
Using Sandpaper
Each sandpaper sheet has a grit number, based upon the number of sand granules per square inch of paper.
· Grits below #100 are coarse and used for when you quickly need to remove a good deal of wood such as in wood floorings.
· Grits between #120 and #150 are medium and are used for removing old scratches and finish.
· Fine grits, such as #220 are used for final light sanding.
Using Power- tools
Power tools can make sanding faster and easier, but-heavy duty ones like belt sanders are designed for heavy carpentry and can ruin the texture of fine wood products. Using a palm sander or a lightweight rotary sander is more suitable for refinishing.
Hand-sanding is always recommended for fine finishes.
Removing sanding-dust
Wood dust from sanding should be removed before staining, either by using cheesecloth moistened with varnish or water OR with a soft bristle attachment on the end of the vacuum.
Wood dust from sanding can cause irritation of the skin, eyes and lungs. It is always recommended to wear a particle mask while working.
AtSplinterd, we use the best quality of locally-sourced wood, which is filed and sanded manually to give each of our products a unique look. Connect with us atSplinterd.com to know more about our products.
