Wood Seasoning

Seasoning wood is a process by which we remove moisture from the wood.

 This makes the wood stronger and minimizes structural problems when used in construction. It also makes it uniformly combustible with less smoke, when used as firewood.

 Dried or seasoned wood is resistant to mold and is easier to paint or varnish.

 There are different methods used for seasoning wood and a brief description of each method is given below. The process used depends on the humidity of that particular area and the type of wood being used.

 Air Seasoning

 This traditional method is the oldest and the longest method used to season wood. It takes around 6-9 months to dry the wood. The logs or planks are stacked on raised pallets, such that air circulates vertically as well as horizontally, ensuring complete airing of the logs and planks. Plank and log ends are wrapped to prevent excessive moisture loss. The raised pallets keep the wood away from damp ground and vegetation.

 Kiln Seasoning

 This is the most common method of drying wood, commercially. It is fast, effective and takes only 2-7 days to completely dry the wood. Two types of kiln seasoning are in use.

1.       Progressive kiln seasoning, which produces a constant flow of seasoned timber.

2.       Compartmental kiln seasoning, used for hard- dry or expensive wood.

 Microwave Seasoning

This method uses energy pulses, directed towards timber, to drive out moisture without any seasoning degradation. This is a high speed and quality method suited for seasoning lumber, paper and wood-based composite materials.

Wood Sanding a Perfect Idea to get desirable wood

Wood is a soft and porous material and this allows us to stain it according to our requirements. But, it is also the reason why wood can get easily scratched and dented. If we don’t sand the wood properly, these dents and scratches absorb more stain and can appear even worse.

 A light sanding not only smoothes down the rough wood, but it also opens the pores so that we can achieve the color we want.

 Using Sandpaper

Each sandpaper sheet has a grit number, based upon the number of sand granules per square inch of paper.

·         Grits below #100 are coarse and used for when you quickly need to remove a good deal of wood such as in wood floorings.

·         Grits between #120 and #150 are medium and are used for removing old scratches and finish.

·         Fine grits, such as #220 are used for final light sanding.

 Using Power- tools

Power tools can make sanding faster and easier, but-heavy duty ones like belt sanders are designed for heavy carpentry and can ruin the texture of fine wood products. Using a palm sander or a lightweight rotary sander is more suitable for refinishing.

 Hand-sanding is always recommended for fine finishes.

 Removing sanding-dust

Wood dust from sanding should be removed before staining, either by using cheesecloth moistened with varnish or water OR with a soft bristle attachment on the end of the vacuum.

 Wood dust from sanding can cause irritation of the skin, eyes and lungs. It is always recommended to wear a particle mask while working.
