It’s not unexpected for kips to be born with an ‘incorrect’ number of eyes. Harusper-ellyllo consider 2 the default more than their actual bodies seem to, in fact the only reason 2 is the most common number for them is by a lamarckian response to generations of pruning the excess. The thing is, haruspers only have 2 eyes, generally speaking, and having any more than that means hiding them, which only makes formulating a false face that much more complicated. Some caretakers elect to remove extras as soon as possible, but some wait for the kips to become a bit older, in case they lose any by accident and end up needing spares. The younger the kip is the less traumatic the process; since their senses are still all jumbled, the loss of a single eye when they still have at least two left isn’t even something they’re guaranteed to notice. Removal is simple if grisly: kips are dipped in an anesthetic jollop and the eye is punctured then extracted while they're out. Orphaned optic nerves just become regular nerves, more or less. Curiously, the surface it reattaches to will likely develop extra sensitivity to light, regardless of anatomy. Obviously these ghost-eyes aren’t as functional, since a small patch of skin or hair can’t replace an actual eye, but they can detect movement, light/shadow, and sometimes rough shapes. How well ghost-eyes work corresponds to how much of the nerve was left, and enucleators are always sure to cut as close as possible in order to minimize the disabling effect - if they know what they’re doing, that is.
Enucleation is common in the Cuprean Districts, especially those of harusper majority, but it’s seen as barbaric by Ulloan-born ellyllo who’ve grown up seeing glamourless and odd-eyed ullylloa touted as unique, beautiful, and interesting. Azolytra-ellyllo are more likely to understand the functionality of practice, but don’t practice it themselves, since azo have 8 eyes - more than even the most peeper-endowed ellyllo ever born (the record is 5).
