tbh im not entirely immune to a villain with a tragic backstory but i do think villain origins are a lot more interesting when the focus is less "here is the original sin, the first big bad thing that happened to them that made them who they are" and more "here is the first time a person who maybe otherwise felt powerless in their life realized that they could hurt someone and get away with it"
you can get a lot more mileage out of analyzing a truly abhorrent character through the lens of like. what sort of conditions would allow or even incentivize this kind of cruelty? what kind of person benefits from those conditions and how? over the more typical who hurt them type analysis. imo.
did normalnudes always suck this bad or did does my memory deceive me that it used to be useful for its intended purpose
recently I’ve been kind of obsessed with making ocs out of / turning ocs into a friend’s species
One of my most inane reoccuring notions i entertain is the idea of constructing a spec bio dichotymous key for some stupid little made up worm. Like imagine a tiny game where you're collecting these organisms but instead of just telling you what they are, you need to consult Literature about it. you need to squint at its little body count its little hairs and ridges and still probably get it wrong anyways. It wouldn't tell you if you're right or wrong. You just make your judgements and live with them.
the real question is if the game would involve casually killing the adorable and hilarious little worms I would concoct for it
more thoughts:
the art should be simple and cute, like a '90s/'00s edutainment game you'd get for pc
the worms themselves are also cute and relatively simple, but with a good number of characters to distinguish them
the worms are mostly but not entirely brightly colored, which is you'd think would make things easy but the coloration is the result of aposematism, and there are one or more overlapping mullerian mimicry rings to deal with
significant sexual dimoprhism or sexual phase changes making some species that given to easily being classified as one (or more) species
your key having errors in general
ldistinctiveness ranging from completely unmistakable to "you made it all the way to this couplet and im telling you theres like 13 things at least that look exactly like this"/cryptic species in general
non-morphological factors like time of year/day, weather, microbabitat, host plant or animal associations, etc...
Random stuff - divided between two segments, a point and click exploring segment where you look through a set of screens and collect the worms you find there, and the key section where you identify what you collected. The little overworld sprites for the worms would not always key out to the same things, so you wouldn’t be able to identify a lot of stuff without actually keying it.
Also ideas for worms + and some characters that may or may not be useful.
This is iNaturalist the videogame. If you enjoy doing this stuff, may I suggest helping people identify things on iNaturalist?
I use inat! What this is a videogame version of is just a real method of organism identitification, based on stuff I was doing for school + like to do for fun

The stoneladies (patulinguidae) are a family of early diverging lanitubate hexapods. Jawless, these lizardlike animals use a broad, toothy pharyngeal fan to scrape vegetative mats (and whatever creatures happen to call such tiny habitats their home) into their throats, where it is further processed by an internal mill. Because many rely on what are effectively bryophytes, stonelady diversity is generally higher in wetter climates. Ironically, stoneladies are important perpetuators of the communities on which they feed, as their coarse setae collect spores and seeds, which they drag with them to new substrates as they forage.
Lacking the defensive edge of jaws, stoneladies must rely on camouflage, chemicals, irritating or even venomous setae, and loud noises to deter assailants. Since the coats of stoneladies are often unpleasant (occasionally extremely so) to the touch, it is generally recommended to avoid the temptation to collect them, at least with bare hands.
The pictured species, the vinegar stonelady (Muriasauria flammacauda), is not venomous, but does produce a pungent, acrid liquid when harassed, which it can expel as either a cloud or focused stream from the first spiracles. This substance is intensely unpleasant to exposed mucosa, but, when diluted, produces a scent some strange individuals find not entirely unpleasant. It also makes a good quality insect repellent.
Thanks for putting up with me have a consolation Zeta
Barb is trying very hard to determine whether Zeta counts as a cyclops or not...
langoliers? Thats the movie about the weird round creatures with teeth that eat things caught outside normalcy or the time stream right? I watched it when I was a wee thing and hadn't heard the name since...
ive never seen the movie actually but I did read the novella when I was in highschool
Are the temples the backrooms?
im stealing from the langoliers and piranesi thank you
Since all your chamber princes have some form of childhood trauma what would a perfectly well adjusted chamber prince look like? Are they possible in the world they live in?
Also what is the role chamber princes have? Like how and why do they exisist. Thank you, I really like your character designs.
Chamber Angels are a kind of entity which exists in an ideally blank dimension which exists parallel to our own. Things (and people) which are lost from our world appear in theirs. Angels exist to destroy those things. Angels don’t appear sentient, and act according to their sole desire, closing what appear to be “holes” in their reality. They are not actually unintelligent, they’re just absolute solipsists. They don’t think of things which are not themselves as real.
A Chamber Demon is a chamber angel that has been tamed. Usually this is done by hand rearing one that’s been obtained when it’s small, either as a newly formed being or from an egg. Rather than destroying disturbances, Chamber Demons tend to accumulate them, creating Temples - habitable spaces which are protected by the presence of the Demon. Demons also keep temples coherent, without them they sort of degenerate into stranger and more hostile facsimiles of locations, with no protection from angels.
Childhood trauma isn’t really a requirement for these things to exist, but it can be hard to avoid considering the unnatural nature of the situation. Also I’ve only talked in depth about two of them which isn’t a very robust sample. I guess there’s a version of Zeta that’s a more well adjusted person, but I’m not super interested in cooking up the scenario which would produce that outcome. I think in terms of mental health, it probably would have been best for Zeta if he’d been allowed to develop into an angel, though he wouldn’t have become a “person” as most understand such a state.
It is almost kind of remarkable how not a furry I turned out
Thanks for putting up with me have a consolation Zeta
