On revisiting the use of Christo, I agree it gets a pass because they were younger and still learning the business. It’s in later seasons where they seem to have forgotten how to handle a situation similar to one they had before that makes me wonder. Is it the writer’s inconsistency or are the writers showing us deliberate character mistakes? It’s sometimes implied they are getting burned out but their knowledge should always be demonstrated since they are now considered senior hunters.

Hi there! I actually don’t know exactly what situations you’re referring to here. Do you have specifics I can address? Because just speaking in vague terms like this, I’m not sure exactly what you mean. I’m happy to do my best to explain my personal understanding of whatever situations you feel might be them “forgetting” stuff they knew how to handle at some time in the past. :)

AND OMG YES, how quickly I forgot 14.06, and Jack’s bumbling about learning hunting techniques. If we hadn’t also had 13.04 and 13.06, I would’ve wondered if it wasn’t just Dean (and maybe Sam, and even Cas) overpreparing Jack, telling him he must use all of the tools available to him so as not to leave him unprotected or unprepared. But because of those earlier episodes, we KNOW it was just Jack’s own personal lack of understanding about How To Hunt Properly combined with an excitable eagerness to prove he CAN handle a hunt and knows what he’s doing. Poor bab.

Like with the line of questions he asked of Athena in the funeral home in 13.06, about cold spots and stuff that had nothing to do with anything zombie-adjacent but immediately “outed” Jack as a hunter to the shifter, you know? Rookie mistake, but also one borne of his need to prove to Sam that he was a Good Hunter and Fit In. And even in 13.04, not understanding why they would need to lie about their identities and have a cover story to hide their true motives for being there. Jack is also still kinda shaky on the How To Human basics, along with the How To Hunt basics.

But you’re absolutely right, 14.06 really hits us over the head with it all. This is a fledgling hunter who hasn’t learned to narrow things down through conversation and context, and just throws everything he’s got at a wall to see if anything sticks. And all of this was underscored in fluorescent ink by his absolute social naivete, as well, in dealing with Harper. They were definitely using Christo as one of those “this dude has no idea what he’s doing and he’s gonna get himself killed ffs” warning flags, funny as it was. I mean, I remember posts after the episode first aired laughing at his awkward technique with both small talk with Harper, and bumbling attempts to slip in all the hunter tests to see if she was some sort of monster.

I mean, to make it any more awkward than it already was, he would’ve had to pour the holy water on her directly, you know? And the Christo felt like it was tacked on just in case anyone hadn’t yet figured that out. To US who have been watching for all these years, hearing that for the first time since 1.04 should’ve been a massive flashing warning sign in both directions-- both to the people like me who thought it was a hilarious example of Jack’s complete inexperience, and to the folks who have whined for years that it was some sort of magical demon tool that they stupidly never used again it served as a neon sign as to exactly WHY they never used it again... because it was stupid... :’D

That said, back to my original anon... if you do have a specific example, I’m happy to clarify my understanding of the thing, but without a bit more guidance I’m afraid I don’t know exactly what you mean. Feel free to reply to this (which I may or may not see, since I’m rarely on tumblr these days), or send another anon (which I will see eventually! I’m checking my inbox at least once a day) :)

It’s incredible to me how much of s14 is... s15 lite, like everything with Michael and his dreams of a monster apocalypse was just the more easily defeated version of Chuck and his dreams of a monster apocalypse.

I’m only up to 14.05 on the tnt loop (or how far I’ve jumped out ahead of the tnt loop...), but I honestly can’t get over how perfect s14 is, or just how much it’s paved the way for s15 and the final showdown against Chuck. We’re truly engaged in the final battle for free will.

But in s14, TFW was still figuring out the details, figuring out how to go from being controlled by Michael to taking control of Michael. Yes, Dean had to experience this for himself, going from “drowning” under Michael’s possession to taking control and containing Michael. It took the help of Sam and Cas to do it, though. He couldn’t have done it on his own. Oh, and while they were all dealing with Michael inside Dean’s mind, it also took Jack on the spot to kill the monsters invading the bunker, or TFW wouldn’t have survived the ordeal anyway. They would’ve been slaughtered while their bodies sat at the library table, not even putting up a fight against the physical threat in the room while they were wrapped up in an internal threat in Dean’s psyche.

Dean’s first struggle once Sam and Cas turned up at Rocky’s Bar? Accepting reality, separating out the illusion and discovering what was truly real. Kinda makes Cas’s assertion of “we are” in 15.02 incredibly poignant now. Because in s15, there is no illusion, no nightmare to snap out of with a clearly delineated border between real and unreal. Exactly as he’s been doing forever, Chuck has leveled up the stakes, taken everything at the core of the narrative and metaphorically brought it from subtext to text.

S15 is playing with the same themes, only there’s no more leveling up after this within Chuck’s story, because he’s dropped the pretense, and the only trick left is to understand what Chuck’s story is, and what THEIR OWN stories are.

Who would they be, and what would they choose for themselves if the cosmic interference really did come to an end. What would the world be like if they truly were free? 

And Jack... is at the center of all of it. Chuck needed Jack gone from his story, because Jack is the “cosmic can opener.” On every level-- from character arcs and all of TFW (including Rowena here, because unlike Eileen, she actually has a mirror narrative with Jack, and fandom’s eagerness to just... shove Rowena aside and replace her with Eileen is a particular point of frustration for me here, in case anyone didn’t notice... Like Adam, Eileen’s return has too much “this is a plot device” around it and not enough of “this is true emotional connection with no overarching manipulation” for me to actually trust it yet... there’s no THERE there, and the show isn’t even seemingly attempting to create it... sorry... >.>) and what they’ve learned about themselves from guiding Jack through his entire journey of existence from nephilim to human to soullessness, to the metanarrative level of “controlling the story” the way Chuck can by changing reality itself, to opening portals between worlds.

And right now, as I’m watching 14.07 (and since I know how 14.08 will go as well), with Jack’s first confrontation with the Empty, and Cas’s bargain with the Empty, and everything TFW (yes, AGAIN including Rowena, because this episode will establish her connection to Jack directly) will do to defy death and Death to bring Jack back. They’ll all need to understand the cosmic mechanisms of life and death itself in order to gain the knowledge and understanding to see through Chuck’s final story and free themselves from it.

Heck, I didn’t intend to add this bit, but apparently I am a sucker for punishment, but I need to say this, because apparently it’s too easily forgotten. But SAM is never set up as Rowena’s “son replacement” figure. JACK is. This is her role in JACK’S story. Rowena is set up, throughout 14.07 and later in 14.14 and 14.18, as Sam’s PARTNER in all the ways that Dean and Cas are partnered in parenting Jack. I’ve been hitting myself over the head all season long trying to understand why people failed to see this parallel setup. Why people thought they’d tanked the entire destiel narrative. And I’m wondering if that’s because the people who stopped seeing it... aren’t parents... or perhaps aren’t middle-aged parents of adult children. Because this... is what being in a romantic partnership with a co-parent is like.

You sacrifice a LOT of yourselves and your partnership for your kids. Especially when your kid is... suffering the way Jack has. But if you survive it, if your relationship survives it, coming through the other side of it can bring you so much closer together. And because this is Supernatural, and we’re now in the final season of Supernatural, this sometimes means LITERALLY surviving Death and coming back, having rediscovered what’s truly important.

The direct line Dean has to Michael in 14.07, the connection activated when Rowena says “archangel” and when Sam says “shaman,” is like the Chuck-Lite version of Sam’s s15 connection to Chuck. Cas’s resulting trip to visit Sergei the shaman was entirely arranged by Michael... manipulation and all. Just like Sam’s nearly dying in 15.07 where Sergei again entered the picture and nearly killed Sam... it’s all just another manipulation (that Cas fortunately learned from the last time enough to have leverage this time around).

Rowena on parenthood in 14.07:

Sam: Somebody is sick, all right, but… Listen, I-I don't know how well you got to know our -- our -- our friend Jack with everything that was going on when you were here, but we've sort of been taking care of him, and, uh, he's, um… Lucifer's son. Rowena: Goodbye. Sam: No, no, no. Stop, stop. He's a great kid. His mother was a fantastic human being, a-a-and he wanted nothing to do with Lucifer, w-who is dead, as you know. Rowena: I hope he's rotting. Sam: Yes, but Lucifer stole Jack's grace, so he's powerless now, and -- and something's going on with him, and he might die. Rowena: Oh, splendid! The sooner the better! From what I know of the father, the world will be better off without the son. Jack: You might be right. We're all still figuring that out. I'm Jack. And I know people have a lot of strong feelings about my father, but I'm --I'm trying hard not to be like him. Sam and Dean, they -- they say such nice things about you. Rowena: They do? Jack: You saved all of us -- from Apocalypse World. Rowena: Well, that's true. Jack: So, before you go, I -- I just wanted to say...thank you.

And, boom. She and Sam are co-parenting now. She never again questions or doubts in Jack. That’s all it took to win her over.

and from the same episode, Cas on parenthood (because parallels are nice):

Castiel: If this "Sergei" has anything even remotely useful to offer, I'll call. Sam: Yo, Cas, wait. Are you sure you wanna handle this alone? Cas: I, uh… I feel the need to do something. And I think Dean's right. We can't afford to overlook any possibility. He seems to be taking this particularly hard. Sam: Yeah, yeah. Yeah, he -- he, uh, was pretty rough on Jack at the beginning, and...I don't think he's forgotten. And I know he hasn't forgiven himself. You know, he's lost people, we've all lost people, but, um… Cas: This feels different. Losing, um...a son...feels different.

and in turn, it’s always been Jack teaching them what’s truly important, reevaluating what his own definition of “paradise” could be:

Dean: Well, bait and beer. You are a cheap date. This certainly isn't Tahiti. Jack: You once told me you and your father did the exact same thing. It was your happiest memory of him. Dean: I didn't say that. Jack: It was how you said it. I could tell. I guess my point is that… if I don't make it... The stuff I'd miss -- it wouldn't be things like Tahiti. Or the Taj Mahal. I'd miss more time with you. I'm getting that life isn't all these big, amazing moments. It's time together that matters. Like this. Dean: Well, who'd have thought hanging out with me would make you sentimental? Jack: I've had a good life, Dean.

THIS is what’s truly important. THIS is what TFW (yes, including Rowena) has always fought for. THIS is what they deserve at the end of the story.

holy heck does rewatching s14 (for the fourth time >.>) really put the entire season in perspective. For anyone who thinks “well s14 was really erratic” or believes that there was a rug pull after Jack killed Michael or that the big themes were somehow “rearranged” to accommodate the runup to 14.20, I’m gonna kindly suggest that you missed the entire freaking point.

14.06... The two MAIN takeaways... i.e. not the in-episode plot stuff, but the MAIN THEMATIC RELEVANCE of this episode is this:

Sam: Okay, I know, I know. How about this? Don't leave. Hear me out. Sure, some people can do bad things when they're desperate or scared, but I mean, the guy we just saved, he has a wife, children. I'm not saying all people are good people or even that most people are, but if we help people, then maybe they'll help people and all that. And that's worth it. Even with all the tears and death -- it's worth it. (to Sam, this is what makes his family important)

and for Dean? it’s all about what love is-- from flirtations and one night stands, through manipulative obsession, through familial love and bonds, through romantic love that gets a lot crazier than stabbing someone through the heart...

On the surface Dean’s journey with Jack in this episode serves as the first steps of their long-needed father-son bonding. In context when we all first watched this episode, we explained it as Dean finally being brought up to the point where Sam and Cas have been in their relationships with Jack. But in the bigger picture, the focus on Jack’s relationship to Dean was all setting up that final confrontation in 14.20, too.

But the fact that Sam-- who has struggled with his relationship to hunting for the entire series (and his entire life), who has in the past wavered between grudgingly accepting his life and running away from it entirely-- finally put this into words in a “teaching the next generation to perfect one’s own understanding” fashion, IS HUGE.

That’s a concept I wrote about extensively while s14 was airing, regarding Cas’s chats with Jack as the Martial Arts master only achieving mastery of his own understanding by teaching someone else. But it applies to each of TFW in the same way. Being able to explain something to someone else helps as a sort of “final understanding” of the thing being taught. Being able to put it into words, and demonstrate that understanding, are the keys to fully realizing it for oneself.

Jack vs Zombies

13.04: Jack’s first introduction to the concept of zombies. His fascination begins as he learns that apparently sometimes people can come back from the dead, in an episode where he openly grieves his mother’s death, immediately following his unintentional (based on his complete lack of understanding that he’d done it after the fact) awakening of Cas in the Empty, effectively giving Cas the chance to come back from the dead for real-- and not as a zombie...

DEAN: All right, here we go. Victim, Wes Bailey. His wife, Erica, died six months ago. Heart thing, out of the blue. Uh, question is, why’d she come back from the dead and knife his ass? JACK: People come back? SAM: When a person dies and their soul can’t move on… DEAN: They’re called ghosts. And hanging around makes them go loony tunes. Uh, they go crazy. SAM: Yeah, question is, since when do ghosts kill somebody and walk out the front door? DEAN: So maybe it’s a revenant. JACK: Wait. What’s a revenant? SAM: A revenant’s more like a—a zombie.

13.06: Jack learns what a zombie is, and he thinks he’s found a case where there might be an actual zombie. His weird fascination with death, with “what’s burned stays dead” being defied by Cas’s resurrection, continues:

we start with flashback scenes to Jody from 5.15, and her zombie son killing and eating her husband, and Dean recommending head shots to kill them. Athena plays the song “They Call Me Zombie” while working in her morgue later in the episode, too. But it’s not a zombie, no matter how hard Jack pushes that theory:

JACK: I can move the pencil. And… I found a case. Hunter's case. DEAN: What kind of a– JACK: Zombies. [He whispers confidentially to Cas] I know what zombies are now. [He pulls the came info up on the computer] You see?

and

SAM: Okay, so "code three" means an officer down. Looks like the victim was– JACK: Covered in bite marks. Like from a zombie. DEAN: Or anything else that has teeth.

and

SAM: Yeah, bite marks. Looks like a ghoul. [Jack looks to Castiel, confused] CASTIEL: Oh, a ghoul is a monster that feeds on the dead. They can take the form of whomever they've eaten. Decapitation kills them. DEAN: Yeah, or bashing their brains in. [Dean tosses the bone to Cas] JACK: So like a… zombie shape-shifter? SAM: Pretty much, yeah. And he could have tunnels all over that graveyard.

His analysis of a ghoul as a zombie shapeshifter is accurate enough, and he’s satisfied. He’s not satisfied, however, by their inability to resurrect the security guard he kills accidentally while trying to kill the ghoul. He’s barely mastered pencil levitation, and doesn’t yet understand his own power over life and death.

13.12: Jack’s not in this one, but Rowena is. Through the Black Grimoire, she has access to spells that can raise the dead. And a couple of inexperienced witches use it to do just that, bringing their mother back as a mindless zombie. Rowena gets to see the ugly side of that sort of magic, in a creature she can’t defend herself from with magic. The magic she’s used to protect herself her whole life fails her, and Dean tells her to shoot the zombie in the head to save herself. Interesting experience for our witch, whose fate also seems tied up in this whole drama with Jack... (and zombies...)

14.05: It’s only a little reference, and not even directly tied to Jack, but to Maggie-- who’s already been resurrected by Lucifer once because Jack demanded it of him. So Maggie is literally someone else that Jack has indirectly brought back from the dead, and the case she’d gone out on was based on this report:

Sam: Uh, Maggie was working a lead. Kids online said they were studying when -- and I quote -- 'a walker tried to end them.' It's a zombie -- a "Walking Dead" thing --

Jack: Did you know Article 246 of the Haitian criminal code officially makes it against the law to turn a human into a zombie?

While Sam and Dean are out in the woods investigating what turns out to be a man cursed into becoming a monster, forced to roam a specific section of the forest and cursed to feel a terrible hunger for human flesh, in punishment for being a cannibal in his life. So... effectively a zombie...

14.06

"Jack, I'm already writing. Isn't that crazy? I'm not crazy. But our love is so vivid. I can't wait to find you. You are the first man to ever get me to leave McCook. Now I'm in the world. I'm sorry I have to kill you for what you did to Vance but then I can bring you back so that we can be together again. It's gonna be perfect. See you soon. Love, Harper"

Heck this was so long ago, but here we had Jack vs Zombies, and I still really need to make a complete post of all the Jack vs Zombies references...

At the time, this seemed to foreshadow Jack’s impending sickness and his first death in 14.08. But heck if it didn’t also foreshadow his second “death” (if death of his human soul counts) in 14.14, and his complete death at Chuck’s hand in 14.20. And isn’t it incredible that Death herself looks to be interested in bringing Jack back while Sam, Dean, and Cas are being overrun by literal zombies Chuck set on them in the graveyard. I find it fascinating that, knowing how Chuck has been obsessing over their lives, that all of Jack’s focus on zombies going back to 13.06 seems to have affected Chuck’s chosen end of the world scenario.

(really gotta compile the zombie references)

But in 14.06, while Sam and Charlie are dealing with a Musca who has withdrawn himself from the company of his own kind and made his own nest out of human bodies (and that’s just a different kind of sad right there... isolation is bad, basically, and makes us do awful things to survive), Dean and Jack face an actual necromancer who has isolated herself through her own fear of being abandoned by her high school boyfriend... (flashback to Jody talking about how first love strikes quick regarding Kaia and Claire in 14.03).

Harper’s choice to murder her boyfriend and bring him back as a zombie, because she was the last necromancer in her family line and was effectively alone otherwise, but mostly because she refused to move on.

Kinda sounds like Chuck a lil bit and what he’s done to TFW over and over again because he can’t let go and move on.

Interestingly enough, this is the beginning of Dean and Jack truly bonding, over Jack’s humanity. Jack wants a chance to experience humanity to the fullest, and Dean takes him out driving, for burgers, fishing... just hanging out like people.

I’m watching 14.07 now as I’m typing this, and I feel like I need to make note of when Dean experiences his weird vision issues that we’d attributed to Michael “spying” on him in the past, but heck... the two episodes he’s experienced so far have happened at moments that feel like “minute plot shifts” of the sort we’ve now learned that Chuck had been forcing into their lives, steering their options, leading up to the Big Final Choice he was attempting to force Dean into in 14.20.

Because that wasn’t just forcing Dean to kill Jack, it was forcing Dean to sacrifice himself, to be perfectly willing to sacrifice himself. And in a weird way, those strange visual anomalies almost look like Dean somehow seeing through the matrix at critical moments where Chuck could’ve been steering the plot...

In 14.07, as Jack is driving, he turns to Dean and says, “It’s like I’m you!” And it was interesting as a flashing arrow pointing to Jack being a mirror for Dean, after their conversation at the beginning of 14.06:

JACK - Dean, what happened with Michael, no one blames you. DEAN - Cool, well I blame me, so... [...] JACK - Dean, I need to do something. You don't understand. I could have killed Michael. Here, when I was strong enough, I could have. But there was so much going on and then everything else happened because I was distracted and stupid and DEAN - Hey! You didn't do anything wrong. JACK - And neither did you!! But that doesn't make it any easier does it? So I can't just sit here in the bunker thinking about it all day. What I could have done differently, how I can't do anything about it now. But I can do this. I can hunt. Give me a chance.

And by the end of the episode, both of them have reached this conclusion:

JACK - I was right and you should be letting me go out on hunts. DEAN - okay, alright. It's not about being right. Kay? You're gonna make mistakes, hell, I make them all the time. But it's how you handle yourself once you've made those mistakes and you've learned from them. JACK - and, how to not beat yourself up over them.

Okay, back to my point. The first of Dean’s anomalies happens while Rowena is giving her diagnosis of Jack:

Rowena: It's as I suspected. A Nephilim, for all its power, is an unnatural presence. Part human, part angel… It -- It doesn't quite fit. It's delicate. Its grace is what holds it in balance, and when Jack's grace was taken from him, his being fell into chaos. The -- The cells are gobbling each other up. Castiel: Well, if it's grace he needs, he can have mine. Rowena: No, dear, it won't do. Jack is part archangel. He needs a much stronger force and probably some kind of magic, and he needs it quick. Dean: How quick? Rowena: I don't...I don't exactly know, but he's enterin' a critical phase. Sometimes he'll look just fine, but then his body will give way and...it'll be the end of him.

And... “as I suspected?” Really? How does Rowena know more about nephilim biology than Cas, as an angel? Where is she getting this information, and specifically the info that Cas’s grace wouldn’t help? That sounds like some Chuck-level manipulation going on.

The next anomaly happens here:

Sam: Well, I just got off the phone with Ketch. Um, he's got a line on a shaman. Dean: A shaman? Sam: Yeah, the British Men of Letters used to use him -- as a consultant. Whenever they needed to "solve the unsolvable" -- he was their guy. He's an expert in mysticism -- esoteric divinity. I mean, Ketch says the Brits swore by him. Castiel: Ketch "says." Sam: Yeah. His name is "Sergei," I-I got a location,and Ketch says he'll set up a meeting. Castiel: Okay, I'll go. You and Dean need to stay here with, uh... Sam: Jack, hey. W-What are you, uh --

This was right after Rowena said none of her witch friends knew how to help Jack, but they needed some new angle to research, to push them all where Chuck wanted them. And this convenient shaman appears, who just so happens to have a vial of Gabriel’s grace ready to trade for a favor.

And the cure seems to work for a moment, but then... makes everything even worse, because heck isn’t that just a Chuck sort of thing to do?

Snatching defeat from the jaws of victory yet again.

They thought they were dealing with one problem, when really Chuck’s always been the problem. And they’ve only now seen Chuck’s influence for what it really is, and become fully aware of how little control they’ve ever had of their own lives.

And the zombie story, and Dean and Jack’s intertwined fates, shambles on.

yes we all know how wonderful 13.06 is, but I want to specifically remind everyone again of Jack’s early painful lessons, and how they compare to what he went through after he lost his grace and was effectively human, but specifically what he experienced after he lost his soul... Both of these episodes, Jack’s obsessed with zombies...

[The security guard reaches Dave just as Jack throws a blast of power at Dave, sending them both flying backward. The guard crashes into a post, but Dave rolls and gets up to run away.] JACK: No. DEAN [to Sam, as he runs off to chase Dave]: Check the guard. JACK: No! SAM: No. No, no, no, no. [Sam, Jack, and Cas run to help the guard while Dean chases after Dave on foot until he loses sight of him. Meanwhile the guard lays in a spreading blood pool.] JACK: Cas, I-I didn't mean to. Castiel, you have to heal him. [Castiel attempts to heal the guard, but isn't able to] CASTIEL: I can't. JACK: Why– why not? SAM: He's dead.

It was an accident, but one Jack could’ve prevented by not trying to play the hero, as if his way was the only way, and he was just trying to be useful...

But in 14.16, his reaction to accidentally hurting Stacy is very different. The setup was very similar-- Jack “showing off,” but this time needlessly, despite the other kids begging him to stop.

And that one thing he so desperately wanted to be able to do back in 13.06-- to heal the guard and make everything okay again-- he was able to do for Stacy. He healed her, and assumed that everything would just go back to how it was before he nearly killed her. But of course it couldn’t.

But it didn’t change anything for Jack once he lost his soul. He was just... able to gloss over it as if it hadn’t happened, even though for those three kids their lives were nearly as profoundly messed up as the security guard and his family in 13.06. The difference was Jack himself, who was unable to forgive himself for the one incident, and even if he had been able to heal the guard then, I think he still would’ve felt the pain of what he had done.

Just as he had felt the pain of loss and the joy of saving Lora in 14.03, even though she hadn’t been harmed through his actions.

And this is one of the things that Dean and Jack literally bond over at the end of 14.06, which proved to be a “win” for Jack, because he’d been right about the case-- literal zombie!
