I really really love witchcraft as a way for Sam to tap into the 'monstrous' part of himself without going completely insane. Because throughout the series we see a lot more witches being bad than being good and they're grouped into the monster category (and are described as gross/have gross associations), and Sam is weird about his perceived cleaness as it relates to his goodness and he'd really really I'm so serious be so much better off if he was able to acknowledge and accept that he absolutely is a Freak™ as an inherent part of his personality and him being a student witch helps him with that in a way that doesn't feel threatening to his idea of being good(because he's using it for hunting and often saving people) but challenges the idea of being "clean" as being directly related to it

The worst about Sam vs Lebanon (or more accurately Lebanon vs Sam) is him witnessing Cas winning the town over.

Sam is doing his best! He refrains from talking about his real job! He tries to be polite!

Cas is rude, snarky, impatient and he refers shamelessly to his life as an angel. And they all LOVE him.

Sam is not amused.

Rowena tells Sam not to worry about it… she's never been particularly popular with little people either. Pitchforks, bonfires, all sorts of threats. She’s been chased out, nearly burned, attacked with whatever blunt object was on hand...

Really, Samuel, it’s like peasants can sense an aptitude for witchcraft. And it's only natural that people like her and him are hated. Their brilliance was never meant to be understood by the common folk.
