Episode 105: 6.01 Exile on Main Street

Finally back from my personal hiatus, and I’m eager to get right into Season Six! I’m not sure that s6 is near the top of anyone’s favorite season list, but there’s just so much meaty goodness hidden away this season-- especially for my fellow Dean girls-- that I’m 100% serious about being excited to get into it. Maybe I can even change a few minds along the way (though... nobody will ever convince me to like a handful of s6 episodes, which will become abundantly clear when we hit them :’D).

I recorded this episode a month ago and edited it last week without going back and recording anything new for it. New episodes will now begin rolling out on my previous schedule, and hopefully I haven’t entirely forgotten how to do this. Thank you again everyone who’s stuck around to continue this journey out beyond Kripke era with me!

wait, general personal crappiness aside, what did Samuel Campbell even do to get sent to hell in the first place.

I honestly have no idea, but in 6.20...:

CROWLEY We'll need expert help.

CASTIEL From whom?

CROWLEY From experts, of course. I know of two eerily suited 'Teen Beat' models with time on their hands.

CASTIEL No. Not Dean. He's retired, and he's to stay that way.

CROWLEY Fine. Then I know of a certain big, bald patriarch I can take off the bench. The point is...They can get us to the monsters. The monsters can get us to Purgatory. I know it.

I just have too hard a time imaging Crowley could yoink Samuel from Heaven. Or think of Heaven (while still under Raphael's control, at the very least) as his personal bench.

And of course, Sera could've 100% intended that we were just supposed to roll with Samuel's assertion here in 6.01 that he was pulled down from Heaven, but Ben Edlund wrote and directed 6.20 and I can't imagine an implication like that was something he'd let slip through the cracks... (even if he did slip and fall into the Grand Canyon once lol). So I have a really hard time un-knowing that whole conversation exists 19 episodes down the line.

It could be that Samuel had committed Crimes™ we have no canon knowledge of. It could be that Heaven rejected him on principle, like a casualty fallen in their Bigger Plans to kickstart the apocalypse. Or it could be that Crowley had Samuel earmarked for his personal stash of Just In Cases going all the way back to 1973. Was he King of the Crossroads even back then? Possibly? Probably? He was at least a scheming, self-interested weapons collector going back at least that far. And if he could have BOBBY'S soul rerouted to Hell, then why not another powerful hunter at the center of the Biggest Doings that Hell had seen since Biblical Times? Just a little spare trick up his sleeve?

I have no idea, honestly, but the show does definitely at least leave that as a viable interpretation, however Samuel ended up in Hell... I'm finding I kind of enjoy wondering about it. :'D
