Why is no one talking about the fact that John was brought back in response to Dean saying that he wants a way to get Michael outside of his head? Remember who the only person we’ve seen hosting Michael in this timeline is?

John goddamn Winchester.

Tbh I was expecting them to explore that angle more - out of all people, why bring John back in response to that desire unless that was his intended purpose? And why didn’t they mention that at all?

So, I loved the episode, but it left me somewhat unsatisfied and yet I couldn’t/can’t really pinpoint why. Not completely anyway.

I think, for me, one big reason was actually do to with John. Although he is a big deal I couldn’t get over the fact that he felt too... soft?... too nice? too... I don’t know. I’m not really sure how to convey it properly. I feel as though his character in this episode felt flat or almost two-dimensional for me. It’s obvious that his character was there more for the boys’ development. I took it as more of a catharsis for Sam and a realization/understanding for Dean. It was something they needed and wanted. That for me in the episode was great, but I think I wanted more connection when it came to John. I felt disengaged from his character.

Despite Mary barely saying two words and crying throughout most of this episode, I understood/connected to her more than I did to John. I think this has to do in large part with the fact that we have more direct or first person background and history with Mary and, therefore, more comprehension of her character as a whole. When it comes to John... Although we get to know him a bit in some of the first season, most of the flashbacks and time travels (concerning John & Mary) throughout the show focus more on Mary. Mostly everything else we know or learned about John came from the perspective of Sam and Dean, which paints a very particular version of John. Unfortunately, this doesn’t really give me a three dimensional character.

I still really loved the episode and I am definitely going to re-watch. (Probably a few times) I do hope we get to see more of John though. I’d like to try and get more of an understanding of the character.
