head canon: melanie mcdonell.

SCHOOL:

Melanie was home schooled until high school. It was then that she attended a public school - which was weird. She was socially distant from pretty much everyone. She eventually befriended a freshman during her freshman year as well during a partner related project. She felt close enough to her that she ended up telling her about what was going on in her “family”. This girl was the reason Melanie was saved, not that Mel’s entirely sure was saved to begin with. Toward the end of her freshman year, the place she resided at was raided by different types of law enforcement. She was taken from there and placed into a psychiatric facility for three years (where her education was continued & was essentially completed).

FAMILY:

Melanie doesn’t remember her biological family. She was abducted as a toddler, she knows that much. And the people she ended up referring to as Mom & Dad were most definitely not her mother and father. The people she looked to as family were actually part of a satanic cult. She was never treated like a child, but as a tool. She was used for... unpleasant things. She was forced to believe that the trauma she was forced to endure, manipulated into enduring, was for the better empowerment of the people within the group. That she had some higher purpose in life and she would fulfil this thanks to them.

During her life with this "family", Melanie had a child. She doesn't know what happened to her baby, she doesn't even know if it was a boy or a girl. She was thirteen years old when she had the child and it was taken away from her promptly. Part of her fears that the baby was used for ritualistic sacrifice, which wouldn't surprise her. She's never actually told anyone about the child, not even the friend she made in high school. After a medical examination was done when she was freed from the people who had her, it was obvious she'd had a pregnancy (and endured sexual trauma), but she would never talk about it.

LIFE & THE PSYCH WARD:

She managed to maintain a pretty solid structure while in the confinement of the psych ward. She was put through some intense therapy sessions, where they tried to tell her that what she was forced & manipulated into believing wasn't true, etc etc etc. She doesn't know what she believes entirely, but she knows the life she was forced to partake in doesn't have to be something she follows.

She was released from the psych ward when she was eighteen, believing she was fit for being outside the four walls of that place. She was set up with an apartment, a decent job (a call center), and a change of name so that she didn't have any ties to her previous life. So that news hounds wouldn't find her, or anybody else for that matter, and she could lead a normal life. She remembers the experience, the trauma, and she remembers the sacrifices. She remembers a lot, actually - but she doesn’t remember the purpose. She’s never looked into what’s tattooed on her body, or the scars on her back, what’s been burned onto her for life. She doesn’t do holidays, especially Halloween. It brings back a load of unpleasant feelings & unwanted memories.

OTHER:

She's still in the apartment where the government placed her, or who the hell ever. She has a contact in case she ever feels threatened or someone finds her from the group she was mixed up with. She has a cat named "Rufus" and despite everything she's endured, the psychological & physical trauma of it all, she seems pretty normal. Melanie just hides how she feels pretty well. She knows how to bottle herself up. She had no choice but to learn how to do that after all those years. She does have medication she takes on a regular basis to help with unwarranted flashbacks & anxiety related problems. She doesn't get out too much, but she tries.

She, legally, has to attend therapy once (sometimes twice) a week - and she does so. She's never missed a session so far, not even when sick. She likes her therapist, thinks the woman is kind. Though she's sometimes wary of her. She can't help it. Melanie has obvious, and understandable, trust issues after what happened to her.

She has an infinity toward horror movies, finding a weird sort of sick comfort in them - but if they are supernatural horrors, she generally stays away from them. After what she was led to believe, she can't find it in her to sit through those types of movies.

She's never been in a relationship, obviously. She's only been out for almost two years. She doesn't really have many friends, mostly because of her trust issues. She likes her job with the call center because it means she doesn't have to leave home. But when she does, it's always to go to a club where she can drink & dance. She likes the rhythmic air that comes from being at a nightclub. She likes the people, even if men are assholes.

i have an idea on how to get point one accomplished but it would be a dark path... like... it wouldn’t be happy?? but it would definitely open up her eyes on her depression and shit. but man, i don’t know. she’s already pretty messed up about not seeing her kid so much

AGE: 17. BIRTHDAY: July 2nd. SCHOOL:

Melanie should be a senior starting this year, but because she was held back during her elementary years, she is one year behind - so she’s a junior. She doesn’t tell anyone, she doesn’t think it matters (also, she’s kind of embarrassed about it?). She does decently in the classes that matter, the ones she needs for future schooling. Really, she’s better as test scores compared to actual classwork - but she does the best she can.

She’s not huge into extracurriculars. Though she did participate in some yearbook planning last year and wants to do it again this year if possible. She did lacrosse last year and is considering doing it again - but she’s a bit of a klutz and last year she sprained her wrist super bad. So she’s hesitant to jump back on the field with anyone. 

FAMILY:

Melanie is a product of the foster care system. Though she has been with her currently “family” in town for almost two years. She doesn’t mind them, but she doesn’t really expect them to keep her around for too long, either (even if this is the longest she’s ever been with a family before). Her birth parents were killed when she was an infant - she has no recollection of the events and it doesn’t entirely phase her much either. She had no family outside of her birth parents, so it’s not a huge loss. Her “family” are the other kids she has come into contact with throughout the state while moving around from home-to-home. 

In the meantime, she gets along pretty well with the current folks. They seem pretty down to earth and they don’t mind that she seems to come home high once in a while. To be honest, they’re pretty chill. She’s not a huge trouble maker or anything, and she’s pretty quiet & soft spoken around the house. She does her fair share of chores and does what she’s told when asked. So there’s really no problems (to be honest, she’s only this way because of her previous experience with “disobeying” in other homes). 

OTHER:

Compared to some of the other places Melanie has lived, living in this community has certainly been interesting. She’s pretty certain that everyone around her that lives here is pretty nuts. All these people are dropping dead and then not being alive and then more dead people? It’s getting confusing for her to try and keep up - so she just sort of sticks to herself and pays no mind to a lot of the nonsense. 

Outside of school, she takes place in a mixed martial arts class. She also has taken a shiny interest in kick boxing. She does kick boxing three times a week and the mixed martial arts class is every Saturday afternoon. She’s also a runner, preferring to go on long runs while listening to a variety of music on her phone. She likes books and solitude, but sometimes being around other people is nice - the only problem is that she hasn’t entirely made any friends. Oops.

Melanie is definitely biromantic (but kind of aro) & quoisexual. She hasn’t had intercourse, but she’s engaged in sexual activities. She sometimes really enjoys it, and other times she could care less about what’s happening. There’s a large part of her that more so enjoys pleasing other people as opposed to pleasing herself. 

She also happens to love live theater & concerts.
