Warnings: Blood, violence, swearing, mentions of death, angst. Parents always tell their kids there's no such thing as monsters. That there's nothing in the closet, that there's nothing hiding under the bed. They are raised to believe that the monsters are just fragments of their imagination. That they should be more afraid of humans. That they should never talk to strangers, or take candy from them. They are raised to believe that humans are the only monsters in this world. You really pity those stupid people. You were raised knowing that everything that went bump in the night was in fact real. From vampires to werewolves to a pesky ghost or psychotic demon. You knew all too well of the horrors lurking around in this terrible world. People should be afraid of monsters, because they're all too real. Both your parents raised you in this line of life and it was your responsibility to carry on the Y/L/N name and keep hunting the monsters that lurked in the dark. It was just you now, both your parents had passed away. Your mother died after being bitten by a werewolf when you were seven. Your father begged that she hang in there that he could look for a cure. But she knew there was no such thing, she begged him to take her life, that she couldn't do it herself. After arguing with her for what seemed like hours, you said goodbye to her. She told you to be strong and listen to your father. There were a lot of tears but you knew she wouldn't be your mother for long. Fast forward fourteen years to your father’s death. Unlike mother who hunted for a living, your father actually had a career. He was in the military, he disarmed bombs in Afghanistan. While he was deployed he left you in the care of fellow hunters. You moved around a lot taking on hunts with family friends, learning everything and anything. You were gaining more knowledge knowing one day all of the information you were collecting in your journal would come in handy for hunts with your old man. Only you’d never get a chance to share the knowledge with him. You remember the man in the military uniform coming to your “aunt's” doorstep. You were sitting on the porch writing down information about your recent Tulpa hunt. He cleared his throat taking his hat off as he looked down at you. You immediately recognized him as your father’s best friend. You dropped your pen as he told you that your father was killed in action. The world you knew shattered, crashing around you moving in slow motion. For the first time in your life you felt alone. All that you had in life was your father’s pickup truck, your journal, and family friends. At least that's what you thought. When you were in total shock, a single nudge of your hand brought you back to reality. Staring into your eyes was your father's bomb dog, his partner Houdini. Your eyes widened as you threw your arms around the black German Shepherd holding him tight. He rested his muzzle on your shoulder as you cried into his fur. From that moment on it was you and Houdini against the world. You moved from motel to motel like every other hunter. Staying with some family friends before you decided it was time you and Houdini hit the road yourselves. The two of you kicked ass and saved lots of lives. You only asked for help when you needed it and God knows you never did. It was perfect just and Houdini chilling and killing monsters. There was no point on getting close to anyone in the line of work. You and Houdini were a two wolf pack, taking names and killing monsters. Time flew by, before you knew it ten years had come and gone. You were rocking your thirties which was pretty good considering your line of work. And good old Houdini was rocking twelve. You took on cases around the country living the hunters dream. “Shit,” you growled gripping you machete leaning against a tree, “I didn’t think there was so many vamps.” you winced looking around. Houdini huffed nudging you with his muzzle, probably wanting you to keep running. It was suppose to be a small nest from what a fellow hunter said, instead it was about thirty vampires against you and Houdini. A twig broke behind you, “Little mouse?” your body tensed as you gripped the machete tighter, looking back slightly, “Come out sweet thing, I would love to see if your blood tastes as good as it smells.” You were about to turn to slice his head off when another vampire came out of nowhere and slammed you against the massive pine tree. You gritted your teeth glaring into the cold eyes of the young vampire. His tongue slipped out of his mouth licking a smear of your blood it off your cheek. You let out a shaky breath as he pushed your legs open with his knee. You remained calm though glaring off into the trees whistling sharply. In an instant Houdini grabbed the vamp by the arm and started shaking violently, pulling him away from you. You growled swinging the machete slicing the head off his body, the blood splattered across your face. “Houdini!” you commanded running off through the trees, “Come.” The two of you ran back towards to your car. You needed back up this was to much for you to handle yourself. Houdini barked growling, you turned only to be tackled by another vampire. “You little bitch!” She screamed baring her sharp teeth, “You’re going to regret coming here tonight.” Houdini growled running towards you as the monster grabbed you by the hair dragging you back towards the nest. You twisted trying to the syringe full of dead man’s blood from your boot as she yanked you harder. “H-Houdini!” you winced grabbing the syringe, “Attack!” You yelled taking the cap off with your teeth stabbing the woman in the back of the thigh injecting the blood into her. Houdini barked leaping attacking the now immobilized vampire. “Fuck, let’s go boy.” you glared down at the woman before limping away. You were covered in blood and bruises, not the hunt you had expected. You walked along the edge of a trail, being weary of you step. These vampires were tucked away in an abandoned saw mill in northern New Mexico on the mountains. They were attacking hikers and campers, raking up a high death toll. So far there had been about ten deaths in the last month. Of course the authorities assumed it was an animal attack. You knew better than that though, after examining the bodies you knew right away it was vampires. But with as many as there were you were surprised the death toll wasn’t higher. “Dammit,” you whispered leaning against the railing overlooking a small lake, “we’re screwed.” you groaned gripping your side pain rushing through you. You glanced down at your four legged friend, his eyes watching you, waiting for you. Before you could say anything else, headlights flashed in your direction. You squinted shielding your eyes with your forearm, Houdini’s ears perked as he listening to the doors open and slam. “Hey are you okay!?” a deep voice yelled, two figures running towards you. “Look out!” You gasped as someone slammed into you, slamming you through the frail wooden stakes. You stared up at Houdini as you and the attacker fell into the freezing water. You felt a surge of pain through your body as the back of your head slammed into a rock while you fought against the person holding you under water. You opened your eyes, everything blurry as you desperately reached for the last syringe of dead man’s blood in the back pocket of your jeans. As you grabbed it the man grabbed your wrist fighting for it. Bubbles escaped your mouth as you fought against his grip, water flooding your mouth, you struggled to not inhale. But as soon as the vamp sunk his fangs into your shoulder you screamed inhaling the water. Through messy and reckless movements you got the cap off the needle and sunk the tip into the back of the vampire. He released you from his death grip, pulling away. You suddenly felt cold, you struggled to keep your eyes open. But through the murky water you noticed the vampire's head floating to the bottom of the lake. An arm wrapped around your waist pulling you towards the surface. As you broke through you began coughing roughly attempting to get all the water out of your lungs. The arm around you tightened as you were dragged to the shore. “Dean!” “I got her, she’s okay Sammy!” you blinked looking up at the full moon, painting as your savior looked down at you. His green eyes sparkled from the moonlite water. Water dripped from his short hair as he ran a hand over his freckled covered face, “You okay sweetheart?” His tongue ran across his plump pink lips as he stared into your eyes. “I’ve had better,” your voice was hoarse as you tried to sit up only to be held down, “I’m okay really.” “Yeah right, you're bleeding.” you scoffed remaining still as a familiar jingle rushed towards you along with another person's boots across the rocks. “Hang on there pooch, we gotta get her out of here some place safe.” Someone carefully lifted you up holding you in their arms bridal style. “God this is embarrassing. . .” you pouted closing your eyes, “I’m not usually like this.” “We got you, don’t worry you’re gonna be alright.” And that’s when you so stupidly lost consciousness. When you woke up, you noticed you weren’t in your hotel, or truck at all. You were in a strange place, but a familiar warmth rested on your forearm. You looked to see Houdini staring at you, his ears perked up and he whimpered nudging your hand with his nose. Smiling you placed your hand on the top of his head and stroked his fur. He relaxed into your touch huffing as her rested his head on the edge of the bed you were laying on. “Where are we Houdini?” you whispered, ‘Where are those men?” There was shuffling behind the corner as someone peaked around. This man smiled softly furrowing his brow as he turned the corner walking to the bed adjacent from yours. This man was tall, like really tall, he sat down on the bed with a kind and gentle look in his hazel eyes. He was wearing a blue and white plaid shirt, and denim jeans. He cupped his shaggy hair behind his ear. “How are you feeling?” “Like I was hit by a train, where am I?” “The Black Duckling motel, my brother and I brought you here.” “You and your brother?” As if on que the door to the hotel opened and in walked the man who saved you from drowning, “Sammy I got an extra burger, is she up?” “Yeah Dean she just woke up.” Dean walked in grinning. He took off his leather jacket and threw it on the bed Sammy was sitting on. “Welcome back sweetheart.” he handed you a bag, “Here you go, I figured you’d be hungry.” “Thank you,” taking the bag you sat up, realizing your shirt was missing. You looked down seeing your shoulder wrapped in gauzes. Dean plopped down on the bed, “Sorry we wanted to clean it. That was a struggle with your guard dog though.” He motioned to Houdini who was laying calmly on the floor. “He did not like us touching you at all.” “That’s Houdini for you,” you unwrapped the cheeseburger and smiled down at the dog, “he’s my partner.” “You two are hunters right? You were after the vampire nest too?” You nodded taking a bite out of the burger, “Yeah, I wasn’t expecting so many vamps though. Usually there’s eight or ten in a nest. This bad boy is thirty or more though, way out of my league.” You popped a french fry in your mouth. “We’d be more than happy to help you out.” Dean held out his hand, “I’m Dean Winchester by the way and this is my little brother Sam.” You choked coughing roughly staring at the brother’s in shock. Sam’s eyes went wide as he stared at you rushing to your side handing you a beer. Dean on the other hand smiled proudly crossing his arms over his chest. You chased the cough away with the beer, before regaining control of yourself. “Winchester!? As in the Winchester brothers!?” The two of them nodded and you grinned, trying to hide your excitement. You couldn’t help it though you were meeting real life legends. “So you’ve heard of us?” “Who hasn’t heard of you guys in the hunting community, you two are legends!” You smiled wider, “I always wondered if I’d run into you two one day. And you actually saved me, God it’s even more embarrassing now.” you felt heat rush to your cheeks. “Hey you were out numbered.” Sam pointed out as you ate some more fries, “How many did you take out by yourself?” You shrugged eating some more food. “Six or seven, but it’s with Houdini’s help.” “Still that’s pretty impressive, some hunts are more difficult than others. You probably know that by now though.” ‘Yeah,” you swallowed the food in your mouth, “they can be.” Dean grinned at you and you smiled back. “So how about the four of us finish this hunt together?” “Huh?” you blinked in shock, “You’d help me?” “Hell yeah,” Dean kicked his boots off, “we’ll finish those sons of bitches off together.” Together? When was the last time you hunted with another human? You hadn’t hunted with another human since you parents died. It had been just you and Houdini for years. It would be different, you’d need more supplies and a structured plan seeing the nest was so big. Hell you’d need to actually talk to them, communicate. You were so use to just whistling different ways and Houdini knew exactly what to do. You were going to half to adjust to this. . .to allowing yourself get close to people again. But from the reassuring smiles the Winchester brothers gave you, all your doubt and fear faded away. “Alright,” you nodded, Houdini looking up at you curiously, “we’ll do it together.”
