Comfort - Spock
One word request: Spock - Comfort A/N: I’m back!!! I’m so sorry this took so long, I had no inspiration and a ton of work to do. I’ll be extremely busy these upcoming two weeks, so I’ll see what I can finish and what not. Again, I’m so sorry this took so long, and also it’s not proof read. I feel like I need to put at least something out there. As always, enjoy reading!! :) TRIGGER WARNING: mentions of death. please do not read this if this subject triggers you!
Your eyes snap open. You’re quick to notice fresh tears on your cheeks. Frustratedly, you drag your fingers across your cheeks to get them away. As you sit up, you rest your head against the wall and close your eyes.
It’s been like this for over two weeks and you hate it. You just want a good night’s sleep. Even if it’s just for one night. The nightmares started two weeks ago, when Enterprise received a distress call from another Starfleet vessel. The ship was in trouble and since Enterprise was closest by, Captain Kirk put the original mission on stop and set course for the Starfleet vessel.
When you reached the coordinates, it was too late. The ship was completely destroyed. At first, you were just shocked someone or something had destroyed a Starfleet vessel. But then you saw the bodies floating through space. Your breathing stopped at once when one of them got close enough for you to see. It was one of your childhood best friends.
You had known him for over ten years. You were high school best friends, and after you graduated, you both applied for Starfleet Academy and got it. You were assigned to different ships but you still made sure to call each other at least once a week.
But it looks like he wouldn’t be calling you this week. A heartbreaking whimper left your lips. All you wanted to do was to head to your quarters and just cry but you knew you had to be at your station. The hours after discovering you had lost your best friend were crushing and extremely hard, but you knew you couldn’t just abandon your duties. After all, you figured you weren’t the only one who knew someone of the other ship’s crew.
Ever since that day you’ve been having nightmares, barely getting any sleep. At first, you tried to put it out of your head, but that wasn’t nearly as easy as it sounds. You even went to Bones to ask if he could help and he gave you something to help you sleep, but so far it didn’t work.
You decide to get up, even though it’s in the middle of the night. Looks like you’re going to need a lot of coffee to get through the day. You put on a sweater and your boots and open the door of your quarters.
You mindlessly wander through the corridors, occasionally running into someone who was working the night shift. You simply nodded at them and continued to walk. When you walk past the doors to the mess hall, you figured you could get a snack or something to drink.
When you enter the mess hall you notice someone else sitting there. You don’t really pay attention to the crew member, given that it’s probably someone working the night shift. When you get a cup of fresh tea and turn around to go and sit somewhere, you notice it’s not someone who’s usually on the night shift.
Spock is always on his station during the day. You didn’t expect him to be awake during the night. You figured he’d try and get as many sleep as he could get. He’d probably think that’s the most logical thing one can do after a long shift.
You’d lie to yourself if you’d say you didn’t like him being awake. You enjoy spending time with Spock. He’d always be able to take your mind off things.
And so you walk over to the table he’s sitting at and wait for him to see you. ‘Y/N, I didn’t know you were on the night shift?’ he says. His eyes go up and down your body, from your sweater to your boots. ‘But judging by your outfit, I’d say you couldn’t sleep?’ he says and you nod.
‘May I join you?’ you say. ‘Of course.’ he says and you sit down across from him. ‘Can I ask why you can’t sleep?’ he asks. You shrug. ‘It just happens.’ you say. ‘Y/N, why are you being untruthful with me?’ asks Spock and you feel your cheeks heat up. ‘I don’t know what you’re talking about.’ you say softly. ‘And now you did it again. You have a tell.’ says Spock. ‘I do?’ you say. You didn’t know this. ‘Yes. The corner of your mouth moves a little when you tell a lie.’ says Spock calmly.
You sigh. ‘Okay. I lied. But the truth’s silly. And to be honest, kind of embarrassing.’ you say. Spock looks at you and gestures for you to continue. ‘Ever since the attack, I’ve been having nightmares. I know, I know, it sounds stupid but-’ ‘It does not.’ says Spock, interrupting you. You look at him with slightly raised eyebrows. ‘No?’ you say.
‘Events from the past never leave our memory. It would be stupid to not think of memories. That would mean your memory would be dysfunctional.’ says Spock. You can’t help but to let out a small chuckle. Spock always has an answer ready.
‘It just seems so childish. I’ve always been telling myself a Starfleet officer needs to stay strong. We need to make sure the universe is at peace. I can’t break down over something as small as a nightmare.’ you say. Somehow, you’re avoiding Spock’s eyes. You’re concentrating on the cup you’re holding, when Spock suddenly rests his hand on top of yours. You instantly look up at him. This is not something you’re used to.
‘Fear is not childish. It exists in many forms, nightmares being one of them. They’re not childish.’ says Spock and you smile at him. ‘Thank you, Spock.’ you say. ‘Perhaps there is something I could do to comfort you?’ he says and you feel your cheeks turn red. Not out of embarrassment this time, but because no one other than Spock is offering to comfort you. You smile again.
‘It’s okay. This is already helping. Just talking.’ you say. The two of you are silent for a few moments. The moment is broken by a yawn coming out of your mouth. You could swear you hear Spock laugh softly.
‘You should probably get some sleep.’ he says and he removes his hand from yours. You had almost forgotten it was there in the first place. ‘Yeah, I should.’ you say and you get up. You’re a bit disappointed you have to leave him already, but this was one of the rare moments you’ve had with him, so you smile anyway as you’re on your way to your quarters.
Spock didn’t know, but he helped you. You could have sworn he felt something as well when he laid his hand on top of yours. When you get back to bed, the nightmares don’t come back that night.
A/N: I hope you like it!! My ship and one word requests are currently closed. It ended January 14th. Check my post about it for more information. Here’s my blurb masterlist.
