"Your Majesty, would what you have done if Shahnaz didn't betray you? What if you survived from the explosion in the royal family's masuoleum?"
(alrighty so I don't like to answer stuff in-character, but I'll gladly make an exception for you ^-^)
Shams was busy training outside of the Elysium cottage when Acambe approached him with the inquiries. Feeling somewhat irritated that his training got interrupted, Shams turned to glare at the national merchant, beholding him with sultry golden gaze. The mention of her name irritated the Prince. He had yet to forgive her, after all. Still, Acambe's question intrigued him. Shams mulled over the merchant's words for a moment.
"Mm... Were you not there when I gave my speech after my victory over Kianshir's army? If Shahnaz hadn't stabbed me in the back, I would've followed through with my promise to our people. I meant every word I said that day: freeing everyone from their shackles, leading my kingdom to a better future... Oh, and I would've punished Shahnaz to the fullest extent of the law, for her assassination attempt." Whether said punishment involved execution or imprisonment, Shams wouldn't say. He didn't want to dwell on it too much.
He closed his eyes for a moment, pausing as the memories from that day came flooding back. His speech, Clara's challenge to him, the words she spoke to him that have stuck with him since. And the night of his passing...
The Prince sighed.
"Moreover, I would've driven out what remained of the Papal scum from our home." It was true. He, with his Sunfire Corps, would've destroyed the Papal States in a vengeful crusade. He would've avenged the fallen. Brought closure to their families. After all this time in Elysium, Shams had yet to forgive the ones responsible for his beloved home going to shit. And his fallen brethren still haunted his dreams...
Shams slowly shook his head. "Well, it doesn't matter now. Besides, a new Sun watches over them. They'll be fine."
He turned his back to Acambe, knocking down all the training dummies with a broad stroke of his fiery greatsword. "Hatred begets more hatred. It's a vicious cycle that's hard to break. I couldn't do it. But I know the new Sun can."
