there’s desperation in the way she moves, the way she talks. slightly pushing herself against their body, the mayor’s daughter whispers. “i actually don’t care if someone sees us.” smiles for a second, a glint of mischievousness in her eyes. throws all caution out the window. “i need you. now.”
it takes a moment for him to register that she's actually standing in front of him. one moment he'd been half stumbling out of the bar, desperate to get away from the noise of it all, and the next — "you kept your number." he points out dully, traitorous heart skipping beats by the minute ( hers was the only one he'd ever memorized ). otto pinches the bridge of his nose; the alcohol makes him feel dizzy enough as it is, but it's just like sloane to leave him breathless even when all she's doing is standing there. "didn't, uh ... didn't think you'd come."
“what does this one mean ?” a faint pink crystal catches his eye through the glass, and he points over its reflection with curiosity. “dove just got back, so i don’t want to curse her with anything … or give her something she doesn’t need …” he’s deeply troubled by the thought, glancing up at the woman behind the counter with sincere contemplation. “man ... what if i just bought her a welcome back gift basket instead ?”
it’s a shit car. she isn’t one to talk, though, considering she doesn’t have one of her own, but even then she can’t ignore the rusty clanks of gears and the engine way too loud to not be concerned about. still, and again, dove can’t complain — not when ellis is giving her a ride home, not when, for a moment, it almost feels like it used to. operative word: almost. she drums her palms against her jeans, an attempt at nonchalance that really ends up just falling flat on her face before she tries her next strategy: small talk. “can’t believe mr. derrick’s closed.” she begins ( she can’t even look him in the eye as she speaks, but well — she has to start somewhere ). “it was the only place to get a half decent banana muffin around here.”

“so, i have this idea,” manon starts and they both know that nothing good ever follows the phrase. she slams her grimoire on the table before him, leaning forward as to tell him a secret. “i’ve been experimenting and practicing just how far my magic can go but i think i’ll need your help with this one because it’ll probably be heavy work.” devilish smirk plays on the corners of her lips. “are you in?”

“i’m supposed to be working.” briana put a hand over her mouth, muffling a laugh that escaped. their surroundings were ridiculous. from the swinging lightbulb that almost whacked bri upon arrival to the scent of bleach that stung her nose. this wasn’t their first time in a closet — it wasn’t even the first time they hid in this storage closet. the one good thing about waiting tables at her family’s restaurant was that she could get away with anything and one of her younger siblings would cover for her. she could practically hear their voices now. if she missed a week of shifts because she was too busy jetting around the world? oh, bri didn’t tell you? she’s out of town with the girls. if she called in sick because she didn’t want to leave the other’s hotel room? bri came down with a bug, but she’ll be here tomorrow! it’d be suspicious if her parents weren’t so busy. they barely had time to keep track of her four siblings, let alone the eldest child. with a quick peck on the lips, bri’s hand hung on the doorknob. “i won’t be able to pay my rent if i keep abandoning all responsibilities to entertain you.”
