Spook Warrior - Pre-production stuff, casting and auditions

All right, I gave the script one last pass and I'm pretty satisfied with it. It works both as a standalone story and a springboard for a potential series.

So now I'm focusing on three things: 

- Working on backgrounds

- Preparing storyboards

- Getting the four roles filled

For the cast, I do have pretty good idea who I want for two of the roles. The other two (two females-- one support and the other a villain) I'll have auditions for these two roles once the two main characters are cast.

I hope to go into actual production at the beginning of next year and HOPEFULLY have the show done by next Halloween.

Here’s the run cycle for Bellsung, the main character of an upcoming animation I’m working called Spooky Warrior. The character animations will be mainly done on 4s/5s but the overall background/tweened animation will be done at a smooth 60FPS.

I hope to have some more animation to show off soon!

Here's the lineup of characters for my upcoming animation, Spooky Warrior. Some are the same from my previous takes just with their proportions changed to make them smaller and cute-looking. The villain, however, is new. I felt the previous version of the cartoon didn't properly explain the world and characters enough so I went with a new villain and supporting character to refocus things. I also wanted to do a character that was being possessed and as the story goes on the poor girl goes through some huge transformations. The girl in the glasses is Zantz, a sort of paranormal law enforcement officer and researcher. She ordinarily uses gadgets to investigate and exorcise troublesome spooks but ends up being possessed by a malevolent spirit who holds a grudge against Roxia, Bellsung's now deceased mentor. Notice that the possessed Zantz's axe has a similar design to Bellsung's gauntlet... I do have two more minor characters to create for an opening scene and some more background work to go through but I hope to start casting the roles soon-ish!

Here's the newest model for Bellsung, the main character of my upcoming supernaturally-themed animation Spooky Warrior. I also included her teacher and predecessor Roxia... who is obviously no longer among the living. I came up with a pretty good story involving the two and the villain of the animation. I wanted to try and do a different effect for the ghostly characters: Instead of having the thick outline as part of the storybook style I use, I gave Roxia a faint glow to sort of signify that only solid characters have the black outline. A little bit ago I noticed that it has been nearly five years since I've embarked on creating a horror-themed animation with a female lead named Bellsung. She has gone through many iterations ranging from a Civil War-era monster hunter to a robot and, until recently, to a magical girl. The story has gone from the Civil War to modern day until I settled on a vague fantasy setting. One thing was clear though through all her incarnations: Bellsung (while wearing a purple-red themed outfit) fought the supernatural and would usually have either have a gun or an extendable arm to fight with. ...Jesus, has it really been five years? lol

More Spooky Warrior stuff

Here's the main character from an upcoming animation I'm working on. I wanted her to have a wardrobe outside of her initial battle outfit and so worked out this sort of cutesy tomboy look. Since she is a bit on the poor side, she has some second-hand outfits she wears during her days off from doing exorcisms. Also for some reason I imagine her having an old Gameboy in her pocket...

Here's a potential villain design: Harbinger Famisha, a Reaper Phantasm that has swallowed one too many mortal souls. This dangerous phantom is always looking for a good, soulful meal. I came up with this character and design after re-watching one of my old animations (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IlgyB3JVUqg) and remembered the bizarre transformation the main character went through there. It's not too often that I make large scale characters (especially female ones) and I wanted to put a horror-spin on that concept. I originally gave this character an ax but decided it would be more fun if she used a large fork and knife as weapons. The belly-mouth was inspired by a scene in John Carpenter's The Thing. As for her attire, I wanted to give her a sort of regal, armored Spaniard look. I did try to give her exposed skin an otherworldly glow but it didn't gel all that well with the design. The name "Harbinger Famisha" is intended to be used as a joke where the main character would mishear it as 'hamburger' due to the villain's appearance and appetite.

Mommet Baum the Harvest Phantasm

Here's what I think will be the final look for the villain of my upcoming animation, Spooky Warrior. I decided to go with a more inhuman look (Original look here: www.deviantart.com/bradredfiel…) and made her into a vengeful spirit that has used a combination of a scarecrow and some of the pumpkins in a pumpkin patch to create a body. The pumpkin on her head IS a mask and she does have a slightly more human-looking face underneath. In addition to the plant-look, I also made her a bit more elegant with hair drills made up of overgrown vines. More to come!

Spooky Warrior update: Updated a character model and did some tests involving the main character’s expressions and one of her special attacks.

I also included one of the ‘stages’ to show how the visual style for the animation will look.
