Spoonie tip
When you have a flare, know that you will be extra sensitive the following days and don't be so hard on yourself. Wear the eye mask Put in the earplugs Avoid the crowds Look after yourself and be kind
Chronic Illness Tip
Supportive friends and family will get mad at your illnesses, not at you for having them.
Spoonie Tip: Treating Life Like a Workout Pt 2
So I made a post before about resting and looking after yourself after activity you find difficult, even if other people don't recognise that task as being hard, now I want to share the concept of 'sets' and 'reps' when doing daily activities.
One of the jobs I find hardest is hanging up wet laundry to dry. It kills my shoulders and back, and even though I've modified my setup it still really takes it out of me.
So I apply a basic gym workout pattern:
10 reps (= 10 items hung up), 30 second rest, repeat. 2 minute rest every 3 sets.
(It helps if you have a nice cup of tea waiting to enjoy during your rests, but it's optional)
It doesn't really take that much longer and it's much more manageable, my shoulders don't end up burning with the pain caused by reaching up over and over, and it's no longer the dreaded task I put off for ages.
I cant do 90 squats without a rest, I would never even attempt to, but I can do them to this rep pattern. The same applies to my laundry!
spoonie tip o the day
get 2 bags/hampers/whatever to put your laundry. put clothes that definitely need to be washed in one, and put clothes that could potentially be reworn in the other. that way you’re not stankin’ up your ok laundry with your dirty laundry
Husband drove me to the doctor today and I wore a sleep mask to block the sunlight to help with motion sickness and it worked great on the way there. On the way back the sunlight was too intense and was getting through the mask even with my eyes clenched shut and my hands over the mask. I’m thinking of getting a larger one to go over the first one for next time.
It’s really weird to feel the movement of the vehicle while not seeing anything but it 100% worked when the light was not bright enough to get through the fabric.
A spoonie’s gotta do what a spoonie’s gotta do. I got a new pain med rx to try on my flare days when the Tramadol doesn’t help very much. Yay. I’m hoping it works well without kicking my butt.
Today has been awful pain wise. This week has been awful- not able to sleep and just not much relief.
Spoonie tip
Low on spoons but gotta do stuff? Take a fifteen minute nap. Put on coffee to brew, set a timer and curl up. Whether or not you manage to fall asleep is less of the issue as the point is to take fifteen minutes to rest. Sometimes it makes all the difference.
