I missed #SpoonSaturday 😱 to make it up to you, here’s a very special #SpoonSunday showcasing the latest creations from our resident woodcarver. . Considering the difference in colour and texture, you might think that they are made from different kinds of wood, but actually they’re all made from the same branch of rosewood. Despite this common source, each piece has its own characteristic. One of them was apparently a bit more rotten, which created a beautiful dark colour. One of them had woodworm, which caused tiny little specks across the whole surface. The way that you cut them to make preforms for the spoons is also a big determining factor in the final result. One piece still has a rough end of branch, because it curved so beautifully to the natural shape of the spoon that the hubby decided to leave it in. One was cut in such a way that rings of the wood fit perfectly into the shape of the bowl. . This just goes to show that, even if you start out with the same material, the end result will be rarely be the same. And these were all made by the same carver - imagine the amount of variation created from different carving styles and experiences. And if this is the level of variation we experience now, think about the range that would have existed in prehistory. If you assume that everything has to look exactly the same to be classified under one typology, then you confuse the links and patterns of the past. And from the other side, if you were to categorise all of these under the one typology of “wooden spoon”, then you miss out on the variety and individuality of the past. . And not just when we think of the past, but also if we consider present society. Just because you might come from the same branch as someone else, or might even have been shaped by the same woodcarver, that doesn’t mean that you will end up the same. And that’s okay - that’s the natural way of things. If we were all the same, then we’d probably just be cheap, factory-produced pieces. Embrace your bespokeness! . #woodcarver #woodcarving #woodenspoon #unique #handmade #woodworking #rosewood #crafting #variety #prehistory #wood #woodworker #spoon #carving #individuality https://www.instagram.com/p/CGepoNqHSss/?igshid=9xddk0iudas8
