#spotted lady beetle

@fluffydogsquad submitted: With Halloween approaching, I wanted to submit some orangey/black bugs I’ve seen this year (all from NJ). Hope this many pictures isn’t too long. Are those eggs on the back of the crane fly looking bug? And if possible, I’d like IDs for the caterpillar? and the yellower moth.

Also, the Isabella Tiger moth (whose orange legs I just noticed today) was super clingy and had to be coaxed off my hand after the photo session. I recognized the pleasing fungus from another post on your blog, and I love the giant eyes on the fly.

They’re not eggs on the crane fly but mites! There are parasitic mites and phoretic mites, and I’m not sure which ones these are. Isabella tiger moths do indeed have very fancy orange legs! Good shot of that. I love the giant fly eyes too :) The yellow moth with the funky hairdo looks like a goldenrod stowaway, which is a noctuid. The caterpillars are SUPER COOL let me share one:

The caterpillar I’m afraid I’m not sure! I feel like I recognize it and it’s just not coming to me and couldn’t find it online. Caterpillars can be hard to track down they they don’t have any easily recognizable markings. If anyone knows what it is, feel free to share!

You’re definitely right about the pleasing fungus beetle, too, good job! And of course the last pal is a spotted lady beetle. Thanks for sharing all these pals, I love them!

Coleomegilla maculata

AKA, Spotted Lady Beetle, drinks dew before getting stuck in a droplet, waving her legs madly.  She is a native species so we’re glad to meet her and happy to know she struggled free and flew away home.

A small orange-red beetle I found on a dandelion in southern Ontario with a little heart on its back.

Omg the heart!!! Love is stored in the beetle. Looks like a very cute spotted lady beetle 🖤

@watch-out-for-the-silent-ones​ submitted: Found this little guy on my spearmint plant! Im in Centeral Ohio-ish (he does have 6 legs the other is just kinda tucked in)

#he was also biting me?#i think he was small so i wasnt sure if it was his legs or his mandibles

Ohhh a lil baby. It’s a lady beetle larva - probably a spotted lady beetle, Coleomegilla maculata. Some lady beetles can bite in larval and adult form, so it’s possible it was biting you! I don’t know specifically if this species is known for it.

Spotted lady beetle, Coleomegilla maculata, a relatively common native species of lady beetle, sadly most of the most common lady beetles are not native these days. This one, interestingly, feeds an awful lot on pollen from flowers, and therefore I often catch it when collecting bees. This one was captured at Blackwater National Wildlife Refuge in the lovely marshes of Dorchester County Maryland. Photograph by Elizabeth Garcia.
