Lesson Plan: Introduction to Creative Nonfiction
Course: 11/12 degrees ArtsLesson Language: Introduction to Creative Non-Fiction * Note, students should be familiar with the regular fiction before it really going to resonate with them * Establish advance: Have students read "Life is beautiful, or is not "by Barbara Kingsolver. This is a test that can be found in the book of essays, Kingsolver Wonder.Objectives small: At the end of this lesson, students will understand the basic concepts of what constitutes a test of creative nonfiction. Students will demonstrate their knowledge by analyzing the essay "Life is precious, or is not" by Barbara Kingsolver.Procedure / Input: Teacher will define creative nonfiction as concisely as possible. "The fabric of the narrative of facts and critical analysis." Examples can be given as In Cold Blood by Truman Capote, a writer at the beginning of Eudora Welty, Small Wonder and high tide in Tucson are creative nonfiction essays by Barbara Kingsolver. On the board, the teacher will write the common elements of creative fiction and go through each one of them, explaining what they mean. Common elements of creative nonfiction are as follows: "The flexibility of the form: creative nonfiction can follow any form - essays, short stories, including literary fiction poetry. Focus: The use of literary devices such as tone, dialogue and self-description. Discovery, exploration: Creative fiction is about exploring an idea or a problem, and exploration disovery itself is the result of this.-Personal Presence: the writer's voice creates an identity - usually themself .- Accuracy: to tell the truth, in other words, including facts and criticism analysisLastly, teacher Finally, we will explain what a test of creative nonfiction has to achieve. The work of creative nonfiction goes beyond a personal story and teaches the reader something, it pushes the reader's thoughts, opinions, makes the reader see something in a different light.Modeling: teacher will give an example of "personal presence" "Life is precious. .. "Professor will explain how this prayer is the personal presence and how it affects history. For example, Kingsolver's essay refers to herself as "I" and speaks of "my friend." Use an example to show students how to create a personal presence. For accuracy at any time Kingsolver references an event, historical event, or some analysis on the basis of the facts. Kingsolver lists Iraq, Sudan, Waco - these are all examples of veracity.Check for Understanding: Teacher will ask class for an example of "truthfulness" of the trial. One of the students to give a ruling of the trial, another to explain why this is an example of truth, and a third to explain how it fits into the trial as a whole or what it means to essay.Guided Practice / Independent: Master students who pass the test and label as many phrases in the personal presence and accuracy as possible.Closure: teacher asked the class what to take and get as many answers as time permits, always arguing how they are examples and how they pertain to the whole work.
