To be clear I mean a spreadsheet in any program (Excel, Sheets, Notion) and for any reason EXCEPT for it being required of you. It could be cataloging stuff you own, categorizing characters in a show you like, etc. But it has to be something you chose to do without being paid or graded for it

Hey - You Should Check Out My Character Sheets

I've been making character sheets for various roleplaying games over the past few years, and I've gotten pretty fucking good at it. I've got everything from small, simple, sheets...

...to complex beasts with clocks that tick and self-populating sections that pull from numbers you put in specific boxes.

I've got big, trad-like games with lots of pieces...

...and more abstract story-games.

And I include more than just character sheets! I include mission clocks, world-building tools...

... and safety sheets with a list of common safety tools!

sometimes I just like to think about Elias sitting in his office and making his little Archivist plans. obviously choosing Jon is a no-brainer because Jon already has a Web mark and that's the hardest one to manipulate into happening

and Jon asks for Tim and Sasha, which okay, fine, Tim's an explosion waiting to happen and Sasha's good cannon fodder if nothing else. but Jon likes and respects them both so they're not really going to create the atmosphere of anxiety and fury that Elias very much wants his new Archivist to be suffering from the get go. so whomst to choose?

Martin has got used to life in the library and just isn't pumping out that good good CV related terror any more because he's pretty confident now that he can actually do the job. but put him down in a whole new position and he's going to be right back where he started! terrified of being caught and going ridiculously above and beyond to try to make a good impression. and that exact anxiety and going above and beyond is going to INFURIATE Jon. plus Jon only has a bachelor's degree and Martin's CV says he has a Master's, and in a field that's actually relevant, which means that Jon's going to feel like he's starting from an incredibly inferior position relative to Martin and is going to be wildly anxious and angry about that. and when Martin reveals himself to be totally incompentent... even worse! (even better from Elias's point of view)

I like to think about Elias having a huge spreadsheet of everyone in the Institute in which he scores them on how badly they'll infuriate and terrify Jon, and Martin comes out the clear winner.

and like at first it really seems to be working! Jon hates Martin! except... after the worms, why does he keep on going out to lunch with Martin despite believing him to be murderously plotting his downfall?? why would finding out that Martin lied on his CV make Jon trust Martin MORE instead of less??? WHY THE HELL IS HE FALLING IN LOVE WITH MARTIN????? this wasn't supposed to happen! Elias made a spreadsheet and everything!!!

also I think Elias totally has the hots for Martin because he reminds him of Peter and this just makes him hate Martin even more, but that's by the by

This is a spreadsheet from Old Kingdom Egypt, written about 4500 years ago. It was part of the diary and logbook of Merer, an inspector responsible for the transportation of materials to Giza for the construction of Khufu's pyramid. There's something beautiful about the organization here, how his rows and columns would fit in just as well in Excel as any modern spreadsheet of delivery records. Across the yawning gulf of ages, we're united by this mundane and incredibly human task. I love reading things like this. They remind me of the fundamental similarity of humans across time. They were no less intelligent or skilled than we, and oftentimes had to be moreso, to account for the many technological aids they lacked.

I often hear people talk about how showing a smartphone to a medieval peasant would shock him, but I want to show Merer Excel. I think pivot tables would make him cry tears of joy.

"Spreadsheets can't solve everything."

Okay, but sometimes they can. I've given up trying to fight with various apps to manage aspects of my life like my financials or TBR. That shit gets a spreadsheet that is simplified down to only what I specifically need. No more fighting through bad user interfaces, abandoned development, ads, subscriptions, features I don't give a shit about, etc. etc. etc.. That shit gets a spreadsheet.

One of my friends was complaining about people using boring pronouns for them, since e uses he/she/they, so I joked that I would refer to them exclusively with neopronouns that get progressively stranger. Thon thinks this is hilarious, but I running out of pronouns. I'm making a spreadsheet

What are your favorite neopronouns? Please share I want aaaalllll the pronouns to properly annoy this friend. The weirder the better.
