Jonathan B Wright: 10/10. A tender boi and very well typecast: his chemistry with Gideon is great. Loved Ernst and wasn't afraid to show it. obc, which obviously also counts for something. If only the audience shut up for 20 seconds and let him breathe. He has a pretty voice.
Andy Mientus (first national tour): 3/10. A shitty shitty boy. I'm gonna give him points for the kiss with Ben Moss, but he was creepy and predatory and it showed. Ben Moss and Ben Fank's Ernsts have like one collective brain cell, so it very much came off like he was taking advantage of and making fun of them. His singing voice is meh.
Andy Mientus (dwsa): 3.5/10. Seems better until you realize he's signing behind Josh's Ernst's back and he can't hear how fucking creepy he is. His singing voice is even more meh and he also shushes Ernst's voice which is like.. wyd. Josh Ernst is too innocent for him so like with the Bens, especially considering the hearing/deaf barrier, he is definitely taking advantage of him. I'm adding .5 for the blocking, which I prefer slightly more.
Matt Doyle: 7/10. He's.. so tiny.. Cast typing is dead. He has a beautiful singing voice. He also has great comedic timing, to the point where I almost think his Hanschen is.. a little awkward or nervous? It's cute and really different from what I've seen before. He and Blake make for a really unconventional pair, but they play it well.
Devin Stone: 5/10. He gives the skim of the cream speech like a bad superhero monologue. He can't really sing either. The thing I found of him is only sound, so I can't say anything about his physical performance, but I don't like him. Obviously the fact that the bootleg is filmed on the world's first toaster doesn't help very much.
Joshua James: 2/10. Whiney, creepy, and annoying. Overacts every single line and makes fun of Ernst the whole time. The fact that he put this on his youtube channel and referred to himself in the third person made me -1 his score. He's super flamboyant, which isn't a bad thing I guess, but it's definitely out of character.
Jamie Blackley: 10/10. He looks the part of a pompous teen, but is still tender and you can tell he loves Ernst. He overacts some lines but he's so good I genuinely don't care. His little smile at "well why not" is the CUTEST thing in the world and I melt every time I watch him perform it. He has a gorgeous singing voice and so much charisma. Basically what I'm saying is he's underrated and iconic
