Dickinson State spring commencement ceremony to be held May 12

Dickinson State University (DSU) students Carlie Bowditch and Mackenzie Hicks will address the graduates at the 98th spring commencement ceremony Saturday, May 12, at 10 a.m. in Scott Gymnasium.

Carlie Bowditch, from Sylvania, Saskatchewan, Canada, is the daughter of Ryan and Joline Bowditch. She will graduate with a Bachelor of Science in agriculture studies with a business and marketing option and minor in leadership. During her time at Dickinson State, Bowditch was on the DSU rodeo team, was an active member in Collegiate Farm Bureau and was a Theodore Roosevelt Honors Leadership Scholar. This past year, she worked at the DSU Heritage Foundation. Outside of DSU, Bowditch coaches figure skating, helps out with 4-H events and continues her education through leadership and agronomy workshops. Bowditch plans to attend equine chiropractic school and travel before returning to her family’s farm.

Mackenzie Hicks is the daughter of LeAnn and Scott Fitch of Hettinger, North Dakota, and will be receiving a Bachelor of Science degree in composite music education. During her time at DSU, Hicks participated in numerous music ensembles, TRiO, Campus Activities Board, NAfME, and was a resident assistant for three years. After graduation, Hicks will move back to Hettinger to teach K-12 music at Hettinger Public School where she has already accepted a position.

Dickinson State will award 168 baccalaureate degrees and 34 associate degrees at the spring commencement ceremony. Students will celebrate their graduation by walking across the platform to receive their diplomas from the University's 12th president, Dr. Thomas Mitzel.

More than 200 students are eligible to participate in this year’s ceremony; this number includes all spring and summer 2018 graduates, as well as students who graduated last fall but did not participate in the December ceremony. Eight students will also graduate with Theodore Roosevelt Honors Leadership Program distinction.

The graduates, faculty, staff, alumni and guests will also hear from Dr. Carmen Wilson, provost and vice president of academic and student affairs, and Nick Hacker, a representative of the State Board of Higher Education.

McGill and Caperton named DSU’s 2017 Outstanding Graduates

Jalyn McGill and Tesla Caperton were named Dickinson State University’s (DSU) 2017 Outstanding Graduates at the Outstanding Graduate Luncheon Friday, May 12, in the Student Center Ballroom. The Outstanding Graduate Award is the highest honor bestowed on two graduating seniors by the university. McGill and Caperton were nominated along with 16 other students by faculty in their academic departments for exceptional performance in their fields of study.

Wife of Marcus McGill and daughter of Brad and Janet Staudinger, Jalyn McGill grew up in southwest North Dakota and stayed close to home for college. She believes that Dickinson State University has helped her become the individual she is today and is very proud of that.

McGill graduated in December 2016, earning a Bachelor of Science in Psychology and a Bachelor of Arts in Music and is graduating Summa Cum Laude. She was also chosen as a student speaker for the fall 2016 commencement ceremony that was held in December.

During her time at DSU, McGill was active in the music department serving as a member of Chamber Singers, Chorale, Jazz Band, NAfME and Chi Alpha. She also served as a blogger for the Department of Fine and Performing Arts. McGill was a member of the Psychology Club and presented her research findings at Celebration of Scholars.

McGill served as a peer tutor in the Academic Success Center assisting students in psychology, music and writing classes. In addition, she helped students develop study strategies. In 2016, she began her work with the Sunrise Youth Bureau in Dickinson where she helps juveniles who have behavioral problems.

Since graduation, McGill served as a teaching assistant in the area of psychology at DSU and has become a licensed minister through the Assemblies of God. Her future goal is to attend graduate school to pursue a master’s degree in clinical psychology so that she can help people overcome obstacles while living life to the fullest.

Tesla Caperton, daughter of Josh and Barbara Caperton is from Dickinson, North Dakota, and is graduating with a Bachelor of Science in Mathematics and a minor in Accounting.

Caperton has been active in Phi Beta Lambda where she has held officer positions as both treasurer and president. She qualified for nationals all three years and has the opportunity to compete in Anaheim this summer. She is also involved in TRiO at Dickinson State, a program that supports students while obtaining their college degree.

Serving as a coach with the Dickinson High School Dance Team the past four years has allowed her to see the program continue its success. Caperton has also been able to mentor young girls on the team.

Most impressively, Caperton has served as the general manager of the Dickinson Elks Lodge #1137 for the past two and a half years while being enrolled as a full-time student at Dickinson State University. Working 40-50 hours a week while balancing her student coursework is definitely an excellent display of multitasking. Her grades are a true testament to her work ethic. She is graduating Magna Cum Laude.

After graduation, Caperton plans to move to Texas to further her education by pursuing a degree in electrical engineering.
