Happy New Year! I know 2020 was tough on many of us, and I truly hope 2021 is kinder to us than its older sibling. This image was taken three years ago today. On this day, the temperature was a frigid -14ºF with a -24º windchill. The waters of Casco Bay and Portland Harbor were steaming- what we call sea smoke- because the water temperature was warmer than the air temperature by a lot. Pancake ice had formed in the harbor near Spring Point Ledge lighthouse. My wife, who I had only started dating 2 months earlier, agreed to bundle up with me to shoot sunrise. Her hair literally turned to ice from her breath! I spent time climbing around the rocks at Portland Head Light, and then asked if she minded if we made a stop at Spring Point. She agreed, but stayed in the car while I stepped out onto the ice to capture this shot of Spring Point Lighthouse shrouded in fog.
