ive been thinking about what i would do if i could make a sam and max game. figured out what id do for mechanics and the duo themselves so i give you:

obvs there's some minor design and vaing changes, but my main pitch is that, similar to tdp, you can play as both sam and max. however swapping between the two feels a lot more seemless. there's some changes in gameplay between them (max cant talk to most npcs, theyre put off by the way that he is. sam cant squeeze into some special areas because hes not small enough.)
the main thing is that the two have 'special abilities' that allow you to utilize one while playing as the other! teamwork or something! sam can start saying nonsense at npcs, locking them in conversation so max can sneak past them to steal things or otherwise cause trouble. max, similar to htd but with more input from the player, can be used as a variety of tools by contorting his squishy body into a variety of garish shapes!
i also think it would be interesting (super hard to do if this were an actual game but it works as a fake pitch) to have two different dialogue prompts for examining objects depending on who you're playing as. if sam looks into something, he's the main one making notes while max makes a wisecrack, and if max examines it he makes weird wrong observations while sam takes notes! this would encourage players to swap between the two more often and lead to a lot more replayability
i have a lot of other ideas for how the plot and gameplay might work, and i may start posting them if my motivation keeps up!
