Redemption

Turning away from a corrupted poll booth. Doing nothing. 

Do you accept that future consequence? The what if? The unknown responsibility of allowing others to be damaged because of your actions? 

Redemption requires the receipt of something in exchange for the clearing of a debt. Do you believe that? So many of these future consequences will not affect you. Rather, they will affect your brothers and sisters. Not doing anything is often because YOU don’t want to. Because it is easier for YOU to not vote and avoid confrontation. In that moment, your one vote will not do anything. But what if a community is turned away? Is that a consequence you will accept? Can you be redeemed? Can you put aside what is easy and good for you? Can you act for your brothers and sisters? In this case, there is not clearing of a debt. You will be giving. You will receive nothing. Giving an opportunity to people who may never know you. You will be a silent part of their history.

Open Door

Franklin Avenue was cast in the first rays of morning when she sat on her porch and started reading Norwegian Wood. The summer sun embraced her even though it was late August, everyone was sleeping in - soft snores behind her, the streetlights faded into the growing sun. 

After she finished the book, she would put it down, walk back into the house and grab the keys before leaving. Every morning, she woke up as she turned to the last page of the book. But she knew that if she could just hold on for a moment longer, just one last page, then she would be able to drive away. 

This morning had been different. She woke up when she normally began to dream with her faded white dress folded ready to wear. With practiced ease, she slipped into it and collected her book before making coffee. She followed the routine she dreamed every night perfectly - the coffee tasted slightly burnt, the sun skirted the roof as she began to read. 

When she left, she would drive out of town to New Orleans. There, no one knew her and she could get a job at a second-hand bookstore, saving up for a one-way ticket to Japan. She could picture herself standing on the streets of Ometesando, faded white dress and a light blue cardigan. The sweet aroma of coffee covered her, a sweet memory of her half-day shift at the cafe. She couldn’t speak Japanese, but she would learn. 

She was happy, if only for that moment. So she rested back into her chair and continued to read, smiling as she sipped the cooling coffee.
