to be clear I think spuffel would be absolutely terrible for all characters involved and I would never want it to be canon, even for the drama.

But it's funny to think of in concept. like if it were a Something Blue situation, I'd be eating it tf up.

a hypothetical reality in which angel returns to sunnydale permanently for s5-onward presents some very very juicy spuffel potential in s6.

buffy struggling with her lingering (but extremely complicated) feelings for angel at the same time as her blossoming attraction to spike. both vampires fighting over her while also being frustratingly attracted to each other (although neither will admit that such an attraction exists). tabula rasa ends with buffy making out with both of them in a shadowed corner of the bronze. all three fuck the house down together. etc

there's the guilt of sleeping with a soulless vampire COMBINED with the guilt of sleeping with angel again and risking him turning evil COMBINED with shame over how hot it is that she can't just settle for ONE ethically-questionable-to-have-sex-with guy.

and angel beating himself up that he's letting himself fall for buffy again, but in a much darker way, and in the process 'allowing' her to ruin herself with spike. and spike loving buffy's attention but being pissed off that he has to share it with angel (even though he regrettably wants angel's attention all the same and doesn't mind when hands wander a little too far when the three of them are getting intimate).

i just think that adding angel into the mix would have made things soooo much more fun worse

au where buffyangelspike enter a very shaky long distance relationship post-series where spike is their in-between boyfriend bc both buffy and angel are properly busy on their sides of the world. except they both have very different wants and needs from spike that he has to constantly ping-pong between and he always comes back to one of them marked by the other so there's some nasty jealous shit he has to deal with that they keep pretending isn't happening and both buffy and angel kind of seem to be fucking him as a proxy for each other except they DO really genuinely also care about him and spike is MISERABLE they're all absolutely miserable

eventually buffy goes ENOUGH OF THIS and breaks up with both of them bc she realizes she's falling into old patterns and doesn't want this for her or them. and it's even more miserable without her, so spike and angel have to figure out how to win her back TOGETHER. which is... something. and admittedly she kind of comes back easy bc she loves both of them so much she feels like her heart'll burst from it. but she demands they fucking work it out RIGHT. no more of that ever again

anyway. maybe it gets better. maybe they keep being awful forever. up for you to decide
