running out of time.
Too many events in one night. Too many.
She had just managed to break out of the trance that she had slipped into when her system failed to initiate a fight or flight response, and instead chose to shut down. (In all honesty, she was lucky to still be alive, when instead of running while bullets flew everywhere, she sat on the ground screaming with her head in her bloody palms.) But finally, her body initiated a proper flight response, and she was approaching the exit while helping a girl around her age, who got shot in the leg, limp towards the safety of the outside.
They had just made it to safety, outside, when the explosion deafened their ears, and sent them both to the ground.
It felt like forever before she regained focus and push herself off the ground to catch sight of the venue burning down to the ground. She stared as the flames engulfed the whole floor with its yellows and oranges, heat blazing out of the building ready to scorch anything in its path, and smoke so black, enough to permanently tint an inhaler’s lungs. Shards of glass scraped her skin, and blood oozed from the small cuts. She turned to the petite girl next to her, both with wet cheeks and quivering lips.
This was all a terrible nightmare. It had to be. And all nightmares came to an end. But not before they’ve reached their worst. She could swear she knew the body that lied there on the ground a few feet away from the fire. She did not think she could feel any more fear than she already felt, but seeing that mess of brown hair on the ground, not moving, and no one reaching for him, taught her that there was no limit to how much fear can multiply.
And so, she got up. Not fully aware of what she was doing as she ran towards the body. Someone tried to stop her, but she pushed them off and ran, disregarding the flames, disregarding the possibility of another explosion, disregarding the glass and pebbles and concrete cutting through her feet as she mindlessly stepped over them with bare feet.
She reached the man on the ground, dropped next to him. Never in her life did she expect to witness the impaling of a real, live, breathing, human being in person... but there he was, a block of wood, (probably the leg of a table or something of the sort), sticking out of his abdomen. She wanted to throw up... he looked so familiar... was it Baekhyun? Yoongi?
She quickly snatched the mask off of the man’s face and... thank the lord... He wasn’t who she thought he would be. In fact, she had never seen this guy before. She let out a cry of relief, but then panic seeped into her, twisting her stomach into knots as she realized, the man was alive... but seriously injured... dying...
“Nonono! Stay with me! No!” She held the man’s hand tightly. “We need help!” She screamed out at the incoming officers. It was the law that first responders, especially medics, could not approach the scene until it had been cleared, for their own safety, but that didn’t stop her from calling out and yelling till her voice cracked and she choked on her tears.
“Stay with me, please, please! What’s your name? What’s your name? Can you hear me?” The man muttered a response, and she leaned closer. “Jaerim? Jaerim? Is that your name? Stay with me Jaerim... help is on the way! ...Press against my hand if you can hear me... can you hear me?” She felt mild pressure applied to her hand, and she nodded repeatedly. “Yes, yes! Good! You’re doing good. Keep breathing!”
“Please!” She screamed out at the ambulances, medics now approaching the scene and attending to victims as fast as they could. “Please! Over here! He’s losing a lot of blood! Please! There is no time!”
Finally, a pair of medics approached her and began attending to the stranger as fire fighters passed them towards the venue.
When will this nightmare end?
