S Pyogenes Sequlae
Questions about the complications of GAS (S Pyogenes) infection give me headaches.
Here is how the questions have been presented so far:
kid with honey coloured crusty lesion on his face now comes in with blood in urine:
Impetigo complication --> post strep glomerulonephritis. The patient may develop hematuria.
kid with sore throat now has dancing motions or blood in urine:
Pharyngitis --> Post strep glomerulonephritis and rheumatic fever.
In summary
rheumatic fever only occurs following infection with strains responsible for pharyngitis!!
Pencillin only reduces risk of glomerulonephritis, NOT rheumatic fever!
