Didn't end up going with this in erstwhile dear because I chickened out but I like the idea of mdm lan just really not bonding at all with her oldest, for a lot of very justified reasons. Lxc mostly doesn't notice because he doesn't remember visits before lwj was born and she does bond with lwj, and that hides a lot of it. But it would make perfect sense for her to have a lot of negative feelings about her kids, especially the first one. It's also a fun thing if she decides to be the perfect mom out of spite.

Cube-shaped "square watermelons" are a metaphor for raising children. To thrive, a watermelon needs space to grow. Forcing them into narrow boxes may produce surface-level desired results, in terms of the conformity and aesthetics you strive for, but it inevitably harms their development on the inside.

Find me the farmer who can grow a happy cube-shaped watermelon through real nurture and love instead of through violence and subjugation, and who loves that watermelon just the same as all of its siblings in different shapes and different sizes, and I will crown that farmer "parent of the year."
