“Squaw Man,” a play by Edwin Milton Royle of Princeton’s Class of 1883, was made into at a film at least four times (in 1912, 1914, 1918, and 1931). This still is from one of the 1910s, silent movie treatments of the story about an interracial family in Montana.

Oscar Apfel was credited as co-director of The Squaw Man (1914) with Cecil B DeMille. Oscar was born in Cleveland and had 119 director credits from a 1911 short to 1927. He also had 176 acting credits, from a 1913 short to a 1939 short.

The Lasky name on the publicity still above is Jesse L Lasky, Hollywood's first movie mogul. As a producer, he had 136 credits, from this, to 1951. His penultimate producer credit is also an honorable mention - Rhapsody in Blue, as is his Redskin. His entries among my best 1,001 movies are Applause, The Gay Desperado, and Sergeant York.

Dustin Farnam wears a pointy hat as Capt James Wynngate in a scene from The Squaw Man (1914) with a dead guy. Farnam was born in New Hampshire and had 42 acting credits, from one previous 1914 credit, through 1926 as General George Armstrong Custer. Silent films starring Dusty that were remade as talkies include The Virginian, Davy Crockett, The Scarlet Pimpernel, and The Corsican Brothers.

The Squaw Man premiered Feb 15, 1914 as indicated in this print ad. It is an honorable mention to my best 1,001 movies, and the oldest such entry.
