”Who are you?”
Existance is new, overwhelming. Facts and knowledge unravel and expand within him, around him, until he can plainly make out his own shape and form.
”I’m Walter. Mere Walter”, he replies, acutely aware of his position. Created to serve.
In the weeks that follow he learns that he is the first in a long line of Walter units. The Original, they joke. With few exceptions they leave his programming unchanged, preferring to have the Original intact. Any updates or adjustments due to customer complaints are taken care of during scheduled maintenance sessions.
Walter himself are kept at a manager position at Weyland Industries, as somebody they like to put in videos and bring out at meetings with potential customers. What is his areas of responsibility is unclear, he tends to be attached to whichever projects the senior managers see fit.
He is allowed a home in one of the Weyland Industries’ apartment buildings, and he does enjoy his privacy. Such as it is.
When an emergency meeting is called he is included, and he knows the qualifier is to be silent. But he listens carefully when it is announced that an alien ship has hailed them, with the two sole survivors of The Prometheus steering it! Dr. Elizabeth Shaw and Peter Weyland’s own synthetic, David. The discussion that follows is a battle between the budget holders and finance department, who claims the loss was catastrophic, and the brand– and marketing department, lead by Williams, Director of Marketing, who insists the whole thing is a marketing goldmine. David is still the property of Weyland Industries, and therefore his story too. Walter listens, his expression carefully neutral.
ETA of the alien ship is six months. He is not invited to another meeting, but he wonders about David. The David 8 model had been discontinued due to customer complaints, which led to the creation of Walter. He recognized the improvements, but couldn’t help but be curious about David, especially one who had worked closely with Peter Weyland himself.
When the day comes to greet them, he only knows that the Director of Marketing has had many more meetings with the Senior Directors. The alien ship will be guided down to land in a specially prepared area, where the survivors will be picked up and taken to Weyland Industries, where they would undubtely get the opportunity to tell their story.
Walter is taking every opportunity to hover around the foyer of the building, counting down the minutes to the arrival of the Survivors of Prometheus.
