Plumthroat's character was miraculously created and developed just six months before the show premiere! Originally, the show was going to be told from the main PoV of Princess Berryboo, but the creators of the show worried that boys wouldn't be interested in a cartoon focused on a female character, so Plumthroat was created.

Honeydew Sun-Ink's struggles with accepting her sexuality and other LBGTQA topics were greatly praised as "an amazing way to assure children that they will always be loved and accepted, no matter who and where they are!"

In the original season 3 overall draft, Creamsicle was going to be set up to be Plumthroat's love interest instead of lost sister. However, the writers of the show found the boy-falls-in-love-with-best-friend idea a cliche, and instead changed her to P's lost sister.

During the second season of the show, a small group of mothers mistakenly found the name of the main Squiddle and of the main villain (Plumthroat and Plumbthroat) to be indecorous, and attempted to sue the company for exposing their children to inappropriate content. The company had a good laugh, and the case never went anywhere.

In season six episode 11, the Elder Squid was supposed to peacefully pass away off screen (the writers felt his role in the show had diminished to pointlessness). However, when this happened, fans of the show angrily called and wrote in to the studio until there was no other choice but to get rid of it. The episode was eventually pulled off the air and rewritten.

The Queen of the Squiddles went unnamed until the 2011 Squiddle movie Squiddles! The Day the Unicorns Couldn't Play in which her name was revealed to be Queen Hestistentia. However, as this movie was generally disliked by the fandom, fans disregard this fact.
