Gender dysphoria is only classified as a mental illness because of the fact that if left untreated (forcing the person to live as the gender they don't feel suits them) would cause the person to experience a multitude of mental issues that could leave them unable to function in society until they get treatment done (as stated before) to allow them to become who they want to be
