Richie probably gets confused and held up about everything. He's seen the guy that's been bullying him for what seemed like the entirety of his schoolyears and only now is he noticing that Max had a notebook of what was probably things relating to him? (Pretty damn obvious it is, it has his fucking name on it.)
He likely sits cooped up in his room for a couple of days to think about it. Because god knows it's awkward to ask a family members opinion on whether or not someone likes you. But, what else could he do? He's NOT asking Ruth. Or Pete. Or Pete's somewhat-girlfriend---nope, nope her name is Steph. This isn't like Paul with Emma.
Richie decided to ask over dinner. It was the safest time he was able to, plus, the most readily available time he could speak to Paul in full length conversation instead of half-hearted grumbled good mornings.
Paul was...skeptical of Max, to say the least. Max had bullied Richie for seemingly no reason for so long, so of course he's not fond of him. But throughout Richie's reasoning, he at least could give him agreement. The fact that Max had been so persistent after so long was a telling sign, was it not? Though honestly, Paul wouldn't be able to tell if it wasn't pointed out to him, poor guy.
At least the talk made Richie feel better, though. But he could never, ever muster up his strength to confess anything to fucking Max Jagerman of all people. He feels like he has to keep it to himself no matter how many times his brain ogles at the fact Max could genuinely look so pretty when he wasn't being cruel.
