“Coraline”
“Coraline” by Neil Gaiman. UnCovered review by Nancy Wessler, Librarian, ACLS Mays Landing Branch.
Coraline has just moved to a new house, and she’s feeling neglected by her parents. When she discovers a portal that leads her to another world, identical to her own but seemingly better in every way. There’s even another mother and another father just waiting to give her all the attention and fun she desires. There’s a catch, of course. Darkness lurks just beneath the surface, and it will take all of Coraline’s bravery and wit to survive it. Did I mention the Other Mother has buttons for eyes? This is an adventure horror story that is both delightfully creepy and enchantingly quirky. Coraline is an engaging heroine--intelligent, curious, stubborn, and bold--and the Other Mother is a monster worthy of nightmares. An imaginative tale to read with the lights on.
“Coraline” is available as a book, graphic novel and film from the ACLS. Check them all out and compare.
