Early Morning In Ludington by James Marvin Phelps Via Flickr: Monday Memories S.S. Badger and Spartan Lake Michigan Ludington, Michigan The S.S. Badger and S.S. Spartan are sister ships that once sailed the Great Lakes as part of the Chesapeake & Ohio Railway’s car ferry fleet. Built in the 1950s, both vessels were designed to transport railcars, vehicles, and passengers across Lake Michigan, connecting Ludington, Michigan, to various ports in Wisconsin. The Badger, launched in 1952, is the last coal-fired steamship operating in the U.S. and continues to serve as a seasonal ferry between Ludington and Manitowoc, Wisconsin, offering a nostalgic voyage across the lake. The Spartan, launched in 1952 alongside the Badger, was retired from service in the 1970s and remains docked in Ludington, serving as a parts source for its still-active sister. These historic ships played a crucial role in Great Lakes transportation, with the Badger now recognized as a National Historic Landmark.
“Breaking the Waves” by Brad Reed. Photographing the Badger coming home into Ludington never gets old. I wonder if the passengers’ adrenaline rush onboard was as big as mine while making this image off the Ludington beach? Nikon D810. F2.8 at 1/320, ISO 100. 70-200mm lens at 200mm.
