what piece of media has been most influential in shaping your life?
Interesting question! I am not sure if this was one of those quarantine questions, but I have a very honest answer for this. I think one thing that fundamentally shaped who I am as a person was the US Version of the TV Show Queer as Folk. I started watching it when it debuted when I was in 8th grade, and it very definitely defined a LOT of the ways that I think about things, including sexuality, inclusiveness and shame.
I think if I hadn’t watched that, and considering where I grew up (deep south) I would’ve never seen queer relationships that were loving, or messy or toxic or real.
It showed me that love can be many different things, and that sometimes you have to build your own family because your ‘real’ family isn’t healthy or good.
It taught me that sex is not something to be ashamed of, and that embracing yourself and your sexuality is a real form of self-love. It also taught me that not everyone is afforded this luxury.
It taught me that addiction isn’t a choice, it’s an illness and something that people need help time and time again to recover from. It’s not about being weak-willed, it’s about being ill. This was huge, because up until that point, I was taught that addicts were bad people.
It taught me that people that have terminal sexually transmitted illnesses, such as HIV or AIDS, are just as much in need of love and support as someone who has cancer, or other terminal illness. It taught me about the struggles that people in those situations face, and how communities cast them aside. THAT is shameful.
More than anything else, it showed me that there is fluidity to sexuality, that queer folks are real folks are every day folks that walk among us whether we know it or not.
I love that show so much.
it's 9:18 pm. im thinking about how overwhelmed i am with school right now. and im nervous but hopeful about my girlfriend's grad school auditions. she's been rejected from 2 schools so far and im a little nervous about whats going to happen. but im about to eat a cinnamon roll so thats nice 💖
She’s going for her DMA, right? That’s tough. Especially on a popular instrument - that makes everything more competitive. If that doesn’t work out, she can still audition for professional orchestras, or teach (privately or through or school).
