So... It’s been a long time, no? First of all I wish to apologize to @makanshoku and @moonstoneflowers for taking so long to deliver this... 2 months late is no forgiving and I probably ruined the surprise for Secret santa but... yeah... Sorry
for other followers, This is the Secret Santa gift for @moonstoneflowers, who asked for something centered on Moon, took longer than I wished since my mental health isn’t well lately as some of you know and I apologize. I kept re-writing because everytime I was to finish I read again and felt I did a poor job for the sake of due date and... Well, Moonie deserves more than a half-ass job done for some due date, so I’m delivering overloaded late, but I think this version it’s to most fine of the other 7 I did.
Also since this is focused on Moon, so there’s no ship mentions, so feel free to imagine any ship in there (aside Moon/River of course)
Also, I didn’t take much note of grammar since my mind can’t seem to focus, and now with two of my beta-readers out the country... I need new ones... Sigh.
This being said, Here goes the fic, my eternal regret for the lateness and my disappearance into the void of my own existence.
~Light for the Moon
Moon stood in front of the big painting in the hall with a longing glance at the face glancing back at her. Hugging herself she smiled bittersweetly, she didn’t lie about letting go, but didn’t mean she wasn’t hurting. In truth, part of her would always be hurting on the lack of the absence of goodbye and the lack of preparation and premature of losing so early.
Her mother glance, so gently and warm at her immediately replied her own thoughts saying it would be fine and she understood, but she shouldn’t let that paralyze her in time. Instead, to use what she is missing as force to move and live and give so then she still have the feelings and experiences, but also, to be able to tell her in someday.
Moon caressed her mother name engraved in the frame and smiled tenderly.
“Oh, mother… I miss you so much…” She looked up to her mother face again, “If you only had known… So much changed. For both me, the kingdom, the future… I think you would have enjoyed a lot, maybe even more if things turned out fine by then” Moon bit her lip and shook her head avoiding to mourn again over the same thing. “It’s been so long. And oh you would love to have been around. I got married to River, I think you have secretly cheered on him all along. We got a daughter, Star. She’s amazing, mother. A truly troublemaker like no other and that gave me more headache than I ever could imagine a child could, she’s brave and kind… She remind me of you in so many ways that I can’t help but wonder how things would be if you two had the chance to meet.”
Moon looked to her mother’s painted eyes again and smiled. This time taking a moment of silent in admiration and taking in her feelings in the moment, not feeling the need to vent or say anything else. The comfort of being in front of the image of her mother knowing her own little family was just waiting her was enough. They may never be complete as she wish, but it was enough for now, just them, Star and her king, his parents and a night for both parts to enjoy reunion.
“Mom?”
Turning to the other side of the hall she smiled at the figured walking up to her, “Star! Is the dinner ready? I took more time than I should, we shall go.”
“Actually,” Star said raising one hand to her mother so she didn’t move as she continued to walk up to her, “I wanted to meet you a bit before, that’s why I am here. They can wait a bit more, I need to talk to you an important matter.”
Moon nodded waiting for Star to take her time to start talking, it was unusual for her to be so formal when they were alone, so the matter was truly important and deep inside it began to worry the former queen the peace of monsters and men could be at stake once more.
Star turned to her smiling gently calming her down, a smile she quite mastered well once she become older and was ready to take the crown. The joyful and shine was still there, but the calm in the smile showed that she had things under control to anyone around her. Her mother couldn’t help but feel a bit proud of such trait her daughter got from her grandma without knowing.
“It’s nothing bad, it’s… We had been talking and…” She looked away a bit unsure before asking, “How exactly does one announce a heir?”
Moon blinked, “You two are trying?”
“We had been talking and all…” Star replied as she looked to her wedding ring caressing gently, “We adjusted well and so did Mewni, we might be time… We don’t want Counselors into this. We want family, this was supposed to be a family thing not just… Crowns, gold and politics” Star sighed, “But they gonna try to see it that way so we aren’t announcing anything out of family until it actually happens. I wanted your opinion on it cause you’re my mother and sincerely, I have no idea on how to do this! How does one say this? Is there any ritual? Do I go through some weird stuff like Mewberty over again? I need to be locked up for security or show off to the whole world my husband hit me up? Do I-”
“Darling,” Moon said smiling gently caressing her shoulder, “First of all, take a breath before you pass out.” as her daughter tried to even her breaths she calmly continued to speak, “Secondly, I’m happy to see you two are to start a family, congratulations. This is a whole new start and as much I wish I could guide you into this part like I guided you in the wedding, I can’t do anything.”
“What?! Mom! Please help me!”
“Star, I can be there for you and help both of you and my grandchild when time comes. But times are different and, as you said yourself, this is a new era. You gonna need to learn by yourself and make into it, and make your way with your child, my way to walk was old and is past already, you’re building a new path and we are walking on it. Just like you’re building a path to later on your child gonna take the lead to continue building the path. All you have to do is make sure that you give the best you can and all the love it’s needed, the rest I’ll leave up to you, you’ll learn and know what to do. You know why?”
Star shook her head, eyes watered arms crossed in annoyance. Moon cupped her cheek and made daughter look at her.
“Because you’re Star. You’re my daughter, and you came to be better than I could ever manage to imagine.”
With quivering lips, Star hold her mother close and sniffed, Mon hugged her tightly and shred her own happy tears. Her little girl had grown so much, it was time to now watch time to watch her to start the new part of her life, she didn’t want to miss a thing. She would always miss to see her mother holding her, holding her up herself, but she wouldn’t trade that to holding her own grandchild for the world.
“Come on.” Moon said stepping back gently as they dried their tears, “Dinner will get cold.”
“Wait,” Star asked sniffing as she finished drying her face with her hands “You didn’t tell me about how to announce.”
“Hm…” Moon thought for a bit, “There isn’t really a tradition of formality for that, normally just an announcement that the queen is pregnant, some absences, and the announcement of the newborn heir. Don’t worry about it too much, just do what you think is best, ok?”
“Would that be ok?”
Moon hold her hand gently tapping gently for comfort “For sure. I trust you and your judgement Star. You’re not a Queen just for blood or names, remember that. You earned the crown, the people recognized and you made it clear.”
Star finally smiled fully and completely relaxed, not just passing the calm, but feeling and actually feeling the joy the occasion actually was.
“Now let’s go.”
“Wait!” Star held her hand.
“Star, at this rate the food will be frozen when we get there!”
“I’m sorry it’s just… argh!” Star sighed “I don’t know anything so I’ll just give it and be done with it.” Star turned around and took a envelope from a lace behind her dress and gave to her mother. “Merry Christmas, mom.”
“Oh, you and the Earth stuff.”
“Old habits die hard” Star shrugged, “Besides, this was fitting.”
Moon took the envelope and was about to put down when she realized how eager Star was to see her reaction to whatever gift was in there. Rolling her eyes to how the ruling queen was silently squealing like the time she was to be given the Wand, she opened the envelope.
Gasping at what she was holding and the message she looked back at Star for some sort of reassurance to which her daughter only nodded eagerly, “I wanted you to be the first to know, he doesn’t know either.”
Mom and daughter hugged each other tightly as happy tears and laughter were sheed, no more words needed, and to be fair Moon was glad cause she wouldn’t be able to say anything for the rest of the evening, she was just a bubble of pure joy right there like years ago she had been when she was told to be expecting.
Now it was different, but just as amazing as she looked at the picture again, the words “See you soon, Grandma!” made her smile widely once more before walking into the dinner room with Star.
She went through many things, but for sure she wouldn’t change for the world. The light of her life, River, Star, now her grandchild, were all things that worth every single battle and scar she had. She wouldn’t regret a single thing. Only enjoy every ray of light.
Pitter-pattering against the roof, racing against each other on the window, conducting a symphony of their own.
Though it was one that you really could not admire - not at this time.
You sighed. ‘Where can all the Christmas spirit go now?’, you thought bitterly.
Flushed down the drain.
Now, however, wasn’t a time to mope over the lost Christmas. You looked over to the left of your balcony, slippery and wet, battered down by the persistent rain. Barely holding back another sigh, you then shifted your gaze up to the equally wrecked clothes hanging pathetically on the racks outside, and sighed anyway.
Looks like it was time for you to hit up the nearest laundromat.
Tugging your hair up into a hasty bun, you immediately launched yourself into a set of procedures: clothes-collecting, bag-stuffing, bag-tying - check, check, and check. 3 big bags of laundry in hand, you marched towards the nearest laundry-room, struggling every step of the way. The rain still hadn’t relented, nor taken pity on you dashing across the street, already drenched. (you had the choice to bring an umbrella, but you were just lazy)
So that was how you ended up in the laundromat with hair matted down, clothes soaking wet and shoes squelching in rainwater, all bright in complement to the laundromat’s washed-down walls, lint-covered ground, and creaking machines. The only pair of washing machine and dryer this laundromat had, being home-operated.
Another set of procedures commenced: insert money, retrieve token, insert money, retrieve token, insert money, retrieve token – why can’t these machines collect all the notes then dispense all the tokens at once again?
Jamming 7 tokens into the washing machine, you then crouched down to empty one laundry bag into the machine, pressing the ‘start’ button after emptying a vial of store-bought detergent into its clutch.
30 minutes later, you reluctantly dragged yourself to transfer the load from the dryer to the washing machine, silently willing the supposedly happy chime of the washing machine to shut up. Man, that aromatherapy detergent was indeed a scam. Insert money, retrieve token, insert money, retrieve token, insert money – ugh, they really do have to fix this – retrieve token, insert money, retrieve token, insert money, retrieve token. Jam into machine, press the button. Wait.
Take load out of dryer just to find out that some aren’t dry enough. Grab a basket and chuck all said clothing in. Inspect more clothes. Find more damp. Cast back into dryer. Throw the other load into the other washing machine.
Repeat procedure for 3 loads. Hate your life.
And just when you were about to set yourself into another game of mindless word searches to pass the time, a blonde man with gentle wavy locks, slender fingers, and a trendy (laundry?) bag approached you. You blanked out.
“- noticed that you only have half a load left, so could we share a washing machine? I only have a few to wash too and I don’t really want to wait”
“What?” you stuttered, finally snapping out of your reverie, “Oh, uh, sure! No problem.”
“Oh really? Thanks so much”
“Yeah, life’s hard when it’s Christmas and we’ve still got to resolve ourselves to be stuck here. I feel the same.” You mumbled, snorting under your breath.
As he then emptied his load alongside your last, the both of you slipped into a loose silence, with him humming under his breath and you resuming your word search adventures.
“here, you couldn’t possibly reject my offer to fold these clothes in return of your gracious -OH GOODNESS IS THAT MY WHITE BLOUSE STAINED? THAT’S MY FAVOURITE!”
“What- “you blurted, but in that moment a splash of water on your shin grabbed your attention. You looked up.
Jeonghan, the man whose name you came to find out later, continued stressing in the background. Time slowed.
Really?
Seriously?
Are you for real?
Of all the times this god-forsaken laundromat could break down, of course it had to be now. When the rain was ruthless, you were shivering and miserable, and worst, when there was wailing music playing in the background. In all its crescendo glory.
Why.
You concealed the urge to pummel Jeonghan through your clenched fists. The laundromat manager was the real headache here - known to be petty, fault-finding, cranky and a grump in general, there was no way you were going to be the one talking to the manager.
But you were also only left with one other scapegoat in that case. Jeonghan. You took a deep breath, then plastered the sweetest, most sickening smile onto your face.
“Dear sir, in case you haven’t realised, there’s something more URGENT here that demands your attention,” your smile collapsing, “THE CEILING IS LEAKING AND THE LAUNDROMAT MANAGER IS HORRIBLY PETTY. I’M DEFINITELY NOT GOING TO SUBJECT MYSELF TO SUCH TORTURE SO COULD YOU JUST PLEASE SHUT UP AND DEAL WITH HER.”
Jeonghan, dazed, then ran his hand through his hair.
“Tsk”, Jeonghan rolled his eyes, stress written all over his face through wrinkled foreheads and knitted brows.
“I’m not doing it.”
“What do you mean you’re not doing it,” you deadpanned.
“I’m not doing it,” he shrugged, “I know it was the risk I took for asking to share the washing machine, but I’ve also offered to fold your clothes for you. We’re even. I don’t see the need for me to do you another favour.”
You rolled your eyes back at him.
“Look, the moment the owner comes down here and finds us both stuck here with her ceiling dripping- WAIT SHE ACTUALLY IS COMING” you shrieked, then grabbed your bags of clothes and started running. You didn’t know how you ended up holding Jeonghan’s hand, and neither did he.
The next thing the both of you knew, was panting together under the lamppost a sharp turn away from the laundromat. The rain had stopped, leaving the night cool and misty, the road illuminated dimly only by the lamp above you and another 100m away. You couldn’t resist the chuckle that escaped your lips.
“Sorry for being a dick just now,” Jeonghan chortled, the silliness of it all finally sinking in 5 buildings away from the laundromat, “was just stressed over my whites- no, pinks.”
“But hey, since we’ve already gone through so much in such a short time, let’s get to know each other better.”
“Coffee? I know a café that opens until the wee hours of the day,” you replied.
“Sure, just let me help you with those laundry bags,” Jeonghan laughed, bells chiming through the silence of the night, “How did you even survive? Do you even have any clothes left?” he teased, nudging you slightly as the both of you made your way to the coffeeshop.
“Well…I guess some things are better left to one’s imagination,” you winked, pushing open the door.
