St. Louis Sets Sights on Strive for Soccer
By: Noah Zimmerman
Actions to bring a Major League Soccer team to St. Louis, Missouri are in danger, as funding for a stadium and team have hit near dead-ends. Governor Eric Greitens has stated before being instated in office that there will be no state funding for stadiums in the state of Missouri, especially one that could request some tax money. In multiple votes, “MLS2STL,” the campaign to set up St. Louis for future league expansion, is heavily argued on both sides of the issue. After debate, the decision will come down to a final April vote
A St. Louis team would be the second Missouri-based team in the league, the other being Sporting Kansas City, one of the original 10 teams in MLS. However, as SKC moved out of Arrowhead Stadium and into their soccer specific stadium (SSS), Children’s Mercy Park, The hopeful future St. Louis side would be the only team playing home matches in Missouri.
MLS2STL would likely bring up the current minor league team, USL (United Soccer League) team St. Louis FC, to play in the fastest growing sports league in the USA, hunting one of the final expansion spots in the league. At the moment, MLS features 22 teams split between Eastern and Western conferences, with the goal of reaching 24 teams by 2020. One of the final expansion spots for this timeframe is taken by LAFC, the second LA-based team in the league. The final spot is heavily contested between Detroit, Cincinnati, Sacramento, San Diego, Nashville, San Antonio, and St. Louis. Only time can tell who can pick up the spot and hunt for glory in Major League Soccer.
Player ratings for the 2-1 victory in Saint Louis, a match that saw us switch to a 442 with Omar Cummings as the pivot for the attack to play around. Some really good stuff including a great pressing mentality but a defensive lapse while cruising lost Mitch his clean sheet. Check out my ratings, add your own, and comment on what you saw! (FYI I rate a standard performance with some good and bad about a 6.5)
