St. Louis Pride
... was fucking amazing.
The vibe was great: openly, insistently queer. It was a pretty diverse crowd, both age-wise and racially. And it was HUGE. Tens of thousands of people-huge. No signs of protesters.
Two things stood out to me, particularly. First was the portions of the AIDS Memorial Quilt on display. The love and care put into each rectangle was so clear. I teared up a little, thinking about all the community members lost to the disease and all the knowledge and wisdom the community lost with them.
The second was the marching band that led the parade. It mostly comprised of adults, many of them older, some carrying rainbow-colored instruments. Out front, a man in at least his upper 50s twirled a baton, tossing it high into the air. The crowd went wild with each toss. He and the other band members wore grins of pure joy. It was beautiful.
Alas, I didn’t quite get to kiss a girl at Pride -- but I did blow a kiss to a gorgeous lady in one of the cars in the parade, and she blew one back. <3
Can’t wait until the next Pride.
Bonus pic:
So I’m finally coming to terms with being ace and I live in a big city with a pride festival, and I really want to go because I’ve never done anything like that before.
But I just moved to St. Louis and don’t know anyone, so I’d be going alone and I’m kinda nervous about that. Anyone have any advice or recommendations? Is it worth it to go alone?
