GIBBOUS interview from STITCHES IN MY HEAD #8.
A couple of people have expressed interest in reading this interview, so here it is, online because I'm too self-conscious to reprint my zine so I just pass it off as being "lazy". Long story short, I found GIBBOUS through a comp tape compiled and released by MR LUMPY of the Dumpers. On the tape he was known as DIE HAUSMEISTER. I listened to a banger song about elevators over and over and asked for an interview based off the tune and the kooky film clip that went along with it.
SIMH: Are you a werewolf? A: I'm not, more of a moon enthusiast. It's large and desolate, ever looming. I hope that humankind one day makes the decision to build moon colonies.
SIMH: Is Gibbous a one-man band? What are the pros of doing a band yourself? A: Gibbous is kind of just a spin-off recording project of a band I'm in called Dem Scientist. It is just me though. The stakes are lower in one man acts, and you can do whatever you want. I guess the downside to that is there is nobody to tell you if you've had a bad idea.
SIMH: Do you recruit people when/if you tour or play shows? A: Probably won't ever perform live as Gibbous, since there's just the two songs (and one is actually just a Dem Scientist song). However, if I did perform I think it would be cool to play in a band of mannequins.
SIMH: Why did you change the name to Gibbous from “Die Hausmeister”, which is the name of the band on the Lumpy compilation? And you released a 7” as Die Hausmeister with “No Elevators” on it as well? Off your own label “Funt”? A: Die Hausmeister was the original "band" for the song No Elevators. I wrote and recorded the song for a school project and made a music video to go with it. I got a c on it but I thought it was really good. The die Hausmeister 7" in the video was just a test press of another record that I drew on. And Funt is just a funny word. The whole thing is a farce!
SIMH: Can you tell me about some of the other bands you’re in? (Trauma Harness, Braining, Nos Bos, Dem Scientist…) Are they still going or past? What makes Gibbous different to you? A: I play bass in Trauma Harness and we've been playing for about 4 years I guess. Our sound bounces around between surfy, spooky/gloomy, synthy, etc...we do lots of things. Nos Bos is energy drink inspired hardcore by guys that don't know how to make hardcore music. Our songs are usually about stuff like haunted dumpsters or bmxing through piles of nos cans. Braining is a noise rock band and our songs are really fast and I mess up a lot. Dem scientist is sloppy garage punk stuff and we never practice.
SIMH: Unlike the other bands, why does Gibbous have almost no internet presence? A: Gibbous doesn't have any internet presence because it barely exists. Martin really wanted to put out a 7" of Mortal Crust and No Elevators so he put it out as Gibbous which is a nickname he gave me some time ago.
SIMH: The artwork between the different bands seems to be in a similar vein, do you do the art? Or look for art to suit the music, which is also in a similar style to each other? A: Like between the bands I play in? There's a lot of crossover as far as people who have done art for our bands so I guess that's why a lot of it is similar.
SIMH: Do you not like elevators? Can you divulge to some of your lyrics or topics you cover in Gibbous? A: I actually love elevators. I guess for No Elevators I was kind of assuming the role of some kind of naysayer of the benefits and joys of taking elevators to different floors. Its taking the perspective of someone with completely trivial thoughts. I don't know, I guess it's not really about anything. Mortal Crust is pretty much just about planets smashing together and all that's left is artificial life forms.
SIMH: How’s St Louis?
A: St Louis is cool. I like it more than most cities I've been to. Good selection of donut places. Good pizza.
