The recent rain is reported to have been general throughout this section.
Officer Bracken shot and killed a mad dog on Robinson hill yesterday morning.
The river was reported to be falling last night, but another rise is looked for before many hours have passed.
The rain of day before yesterday caused the masonry of the North avenue bridge to give way and tumble in. The mortar had not had time to harden.
The residences of Messrs. John Bremond and M. Butler, now rapidly approaching completion, will be two of the handsomest homes in the state.
It is reported at the police station that the recent rain has put the Brush sewer in bad condition in the alley south of Sixth street, between Brazos and San Jacinto.
Kemp Street, the negro who was assaulted in his own house on Walnut creek, by unknown assailants, some time ago, has recovered sufficiently to come to the city. John and Ed Brooks, under arrest for the crime, are still in jail.
Sanitary Inspector Johnson has put another cart into service and has begun the work of cleaning the alleys. He requests that parties will hereafter put their garbage in boxes or barrels in the alleys, instead of emptying on the ground, as they will thereby save a great deal of trouble to the sanitary force.
Mrs. Von Walthersdoff has invited Mr. Wheeler to play the organ at St. David’s church on Sunday morning. Mr. Wheeler was organist at a church in Boston, and is now visiting Texas. Mr. Wheeler will also play at the evening service. The morning choir meet for practice at the church this evening at 5:30; the boy choir, Friday evening, at 7:00.
The jury in the case of Wallace Bell against the International & Great Northern railroad brought in a verdict for the plaintiff yesterday for $7,240. The case was closely contested on both sides, and its successful termination is a high compliment to Mr. John Dowell who, single handed fought the strong firm of Maxey & Fisher and won from them a decisive victory. Mr. Dowell made a brilliant struggle for his client, and came out with flying colors. The case will be taken up.
