An Increase - Injuries, Plans, Choirs, Teams - Conducted Themselves in a Bad Manner Generally
15 MAR 1887. Austin Daily Statesman.
The preface to the new city directory, by the publishers, Messrs. Fourmy & Morrison, contains some highly interesting statements concerning the growth of Austin in wealth and population. These statements are all the more valuable, coming from gentlemen, one of whom is a resident of Galveston, the other of San Antonio. The total population of Austin is set down by the new directory at 27,000 souls. This is based on the usual proportion between the number of names in the directory and the population. Messrs. Fourmy & Morrison, who have no motive, whatever, in exaggerating, set down the number of names in 1880 at 3,492 and the then population of Austin 12,222. In 1887 they announce the number of names 7,741, and the population 27,093, an increase of 4,249 names and 14,870 population since 1880.
As to wealth, attention is called to the fact, shown by the books of the city assessor, of an increase of $300,000 in taxable values in 1886 over 1885.
Messrs. Morrison & Fourmy are directorymen of long experience, and the correctness of their estimates concerning the population of Austin will be generally accepted; and, if true, they show the Capital City of Texas is fast coming to the front as one of the most populous, as she will eventually be one of the finest and grandest cities in the Empire State of the South.
Taxable property, $8,000,000!
