ARVO PÄRT AND ST.VLADIMIR’S SEMINARY
In December 2011, three St. Vladimir’s representatives traveled to Estonia to meet with this contemporary musical genius. An instant bond developed in the group through its solidarity of purpose and a common love for the spirituality of his music. Pärt could plainly see that St. Vladimir’s Seminary is uniquely qualified to elucidate the intangible spiritual fabric so tightly woven into his musical tapestry.
Pärt is convinced St. Vladimir’s Seminary is the leading Orthodox institution in the West. Beyond the religious customs he shares with the seminary, Pärt also values St. Vladimir’s consistent engagement with fine art and contempo- rary culture. Mutual respect, spiritual community, and the transcendental power of music create the base for a strong collaboration between Pärt and St. Vladimir’s Seminary. Thought and belief are so tightly aligned between Pärt and the seminary that the composer commented at a subsequent occasion that he could not speak with others as he speaks with us at SVS: “You are our friends, and you are our hope.” This alliance will build upon both the profound acoustic creations of Arvo Pärt and the spiritual milieu of the seminary.
In recognition of the impact Pärt’s spiritually-infused music has had on generations of music lovers, the Board of Trustees and the faculty of the seminary have agreed to award the composer the Doctorate of Sacred Music honoris causa. For his own sign of good will, Pärt has allowed the seminary unprecedented access to his fiercely protected private life. The possibilities for cultural growth and spiritual enlightenment this union offers are palpable.
