I'm rewatching Star Trek Beyond and just They are in the middle of a heated battle and kirk loses contact with spock and is immediately like "sulu take the con" and runs off the bridge to find him. These idiot space husbands istg.
some beautiful shots of sunrise on Altamid 🚀
who mourns for Adonais indeed?
So, I know Suicide Squad won best makeup, but can we just take a moment to appreciate the makeup in Star Trek Beyond anyway? I mean, just look at these:
First off, Kalara. The color gradient and the ridges are just gorgeous.
For Natalia, who only even in this one scene, they had to create super-light prostheses, AND they used a new iridescent, color-shifting pigment that had never been used in makeup before.
Those lights on Krall? They’re not CG. They imbedded fiber optics into the prosthesis.
And Jaylah. Wonderful Jaylah, they made a “bulletproof” makeup formula that won’t bleed at all and then APPLIED ALL OF THOSE LINES BY HAND.
I just... LOOK
AT
THESE
Star Trek Beyond
My dash speaks for itself, doesn’t it? :P
Definitely Bones. If I had to narrow it down some more I would probably say snarky Bones, but I’ll also take ‘competent medical officer’ Bones, and ‘reluctant flyer’ Bones because I love all of those aspects. But yeah, the acerbic comments of Leonard McCoy made that movie for me.
(Runner up goes to: Yorktown worldbuilding and the soundtrack that played when they first introduced the space station (so pretty and hopeful))
hey so I wrote this while half asleep last night so don’t hold any misinformation against me but this is my review/critique of star trek:beyond!! on the specific things I care abt I think it was much, much better than the last two movies!!
I watched beyond on the first day it came out bc even if I’m not a fan of the newest movies I still love the star trek franchise as a whole and hope for the best each time
BASICALLY my impression is that this movie improved greatly on the parts I hated from the previous two aos movies--it tried to recapture the progressive nature of trek in the small things. the last two just felt like they said ‘fuck it’ to roddenberry’s vision and the rest of the st universe, whitewashing all non-essential characters and cutting even preexisting women from tos, making them on the whole less inclusive than a series made in the 1960s. given that the inclusion and progressive vision of star trek is something that I have written an 18 pg paper on, I felt that this was the most effective way to ruin the series. when benedict cumberbatch, the whitest man I’ve ever seen in my life, was cast to play the indian khan noonien singh it seemed a clear death sentence.
I’ve waited too long to make this post, so my memory is fading, but this movie was better in that regard, probably thanks to the addition of director justin lin (and writer simon pegg!), who is a longtime trek fan & understands the franchise better. Even the addition of more inclusive background characters was progress! it felt like a real trek film again--there were SO many more women, poc and woc specifically!!! even if these weren’t major characters, these are more actors and actresses who are getting a check that might otherwise be hard to come across, and get to put this film on their resume--hopefully in future trek films we will be able to introduce more major characters and create a more inclusive main cast!! especially in chekov’s absence (rip anton yelchin, a great actor & one of the ones in this series who most closely fit the original series counterpart) there will be a space that will need to be filled, someone to perform his functions on the ship. we will HAVE to introduce a new character, why not use this opportunity to expand upon the lacking amt of diversity in the bridge crew? this isn’t betraying the original series in any way; roddenberry originally wanted a latino helmsman and a black woman as second in command on the bridge and was rejected by the network. when he wrote the original pilot and made her white, as requested, the network still rejected a woman in such a position of power--thus how uhura arose, always a great character but too often sidelined. but it’s 2016 now, not 1965! we can deliver on gene’s original dream.
the issues I had with the movie were pretty moderate, but probably not noticeable to people who haven’t seen the original series--I thought the writing was unbelievable in some spots, it just didn’t fit the characters. I’d have to refresh my memory of tos to be conclusive on this but I’m not sure the idea of spock being hysterical sits right w/ me--idr how he acted when hurt in the other series but spock often holds up logic & emotionlessness even longer than most vulcans, possibly because as half-vulcan he feels he has something to prove. the closest thing I can recall is the treatment of sarek (when dying) on tng in which he expressed emotions, but that was due to a very rare neurological disease which was in its last stages and which was literally killing him. I also noticed that in this movie spock is so pale, so much whiter than even white human crew members, but this makes no sense--spock was originally used as a sort of allegory for race relations on earth and always had a darker complexion than most white humans. this also makes sense as vulcan is a desert planet--scientifically speaking, if vulcans are as biologically similar to humans as they seem to be, they would have evolved something akin to our higher melanin content in humans living in more arid areas, which accounts for black vulcans like tuvok in voyager. although vulcan is destroyed (a plot point I REALLY dislike!!!), if spock could hypothetically return, he’d be in deep shit being as pale as he is--it just doesn’t make sense from a biological/evolutionary standpoint. in tos again, spock’s complexion was a subject of concern among the network--they thought it made him look satanic. as the series went on, his skin tone became more, well, human, but it only faded to a light olive tint. to have quinto that pale just doesn’t make any sense imo

Here. Have this crappy AOS Spock/Bones vid with crappy cam footage from ST:Beyond. To be completely clear, this video contains spoilers. Bones finds himself reluctantly drawn to Spock. Footage from all three AOS movies.
