Summary: "Clara, the daughter of a wealthy banker tangos with a smooth talking, pretty face, hustler - Elias Moore. Against her parents' wishes, she chooses to take the route of befriending the businessman."
The bells tied to the cafe door rang, notifying everyone in the cafe that another patron was strolling in, perhaps searching for a hot cup of tea or coffee. Your ears perked up at this and turned to look, whatever your father was rambling on about becoming a distant memory.
A pair of identical brothers strolled in, one with a stern look most evident on his brow and the other sporting a more relaxed look with a soft curve to the corners of his lips. You watched as they approached the counter and took a glance at the menu and the pastries in the display.
“Clara Honey,” Daddy coughed, pulling you out of your observation.
“Yes Daddy?” You asked with a smile, doing your best to reset your attention on him.
“You still wantin’ that dress?” He asked, “I got the seamstress comin’ to the house to get you and your sisters fitted- y'know with the days gettin’ hotter and what not,” he explained as his eyes glanced outside to look at the sun.
Daddy’s girl was the most mundane way to put things. In your father’s eyes, you and your sisters-his baby girls were his world. There was no short cuts or anything, he always proved to deliver when it came to taking care of his family.
Growing up, times weren’t always this easy and giving. But your father struck gold when he opened a bank in the Delta and offered financial assistance to those who needed it. And after his business really took off, he knew that y’all would be set for life.
“Really?” You gasped, already up from your chair-tall like a flower in full bloom. “Thank you so much daddy,” you squealed as you wrapped your arms around his neck, earning a chuckle from the bellows of his large belly.
“Anything for you sugar plum,” Your father beamed, patting your shoulder gently. “Now we ought to get goin’ n' head to the shop and buy some peaches for ya mama,” he instructed as he stood up from his seat.
You simply hummed as your retrieved your purse from the table and turned to make way to the cafe doors, only to be greeted by the same set of twins. A wave of shyness overcame you as the one with the relaxed posture tipped his red rimmed hat to you.
“Mornin’,” he grinned, the kind of smile that could make a woman weak in the knees and your just about gave out.
“Woah there sugar,” your dad laughed obliviously, securing your arm in the crook of his “Gentlemen,” he nodded politely to the twins, guiding the two of you out.
A shaky sigh left your lips as your tried to regain your composure. In your mind, you were sure that you never in your life had met a man so handsome. Goosebumps could be seen dancing on your skin just pondering on his pretty smile.
Your sisters took initiative to tease you about it as soon as you arrived home. And as a close-knit band of sisters do, you stayed up giggling about it all night.
“Oh he was so charmin’” you sighed dreamily about the nameless man who wandered into your every thought.
“I’d like to meet this boy,” your younger sister-Helen chirped, legs dangling off the bed.
“According to Clara, he ain’t no boy,” your older sister corrected. “He’s a whole man and then sum’,” Joyce joked from her spot on the floor while you had your chin resting in your hands from the comfort of your bed.
"I didn't even get a name, no nothin'," you said in a sad tone.
"Maybe daddy knows em'?" Helen suggested as she nudged you lightly at her idea. "Wouldn't hurt to ask right?"
"Now that thought ain't half bad," you admitted, tapping your pointer finger on your chin. "I'll go ask him now," you say matter-of-factly and began getting out of bed.
"Clara, it's real late and mama and daddy might already've gone to bed," Joyce pointed out almost as if to warn you.
"I'm sure they won't mind," you said, dismissing your older sister's worries and heading out of your shared room.
Your hand flipped up one of the light switches in the hall as you made your way to the biggest room a couple strides away from your's. Excitedly, you knocked your first on their bedroom door.
"Mama? Daddy? It's Clara!" you said before hearing a tired groan from behind the door.
Upon you swinging the door open, your parents sat up and squinted in your the direction, the hallway light framing your figure. Mama reached for her glasses as daddy went to light the candle on his nightstand.
"Sugar plum, that you?" Daddy muttered sleepily as you scurried over and sat at the foot of their bed. "What's got you up at this hour?"
"Daddy so remember when we went out for some pastries and we was about to leave and those two brothers came in lookin' for a bite?" you rambled excitedly with parents trying to catch up. "Well I thought the young man that greeted us was real good lookin' and wanted to know if you knew him?" you asked breathlessly, shoulders rising and falling at the pace of your short breaths.
"Well I can't say I ain't seen them before but uh-" Your father's voice trailed off as he rubbed his eyes tiredly, "Those two have gotten into some not-so-reputable business" he explains.
"Like what?" you asked, glancing in between both your parents worriedly. "Surely not anything too bad?" you hoped aloud.
"Them Moore brothers been in some dealings with them gangs in Chicago I heard," Daddy said, trying to recall the information. "Then they been running that juke joint. Gamblin' n' drinkin',"
"Ah, men of business then," you noted, "I'm sure they make well for themselves," you remarked with a nod.
Mama sighed with a small smile at your excitement, reaching to place her hand atop of yours. You blinked as you watched your parents share a knowing look.
"It may not be wise that you pursue it honey," Mama voiced with concern evident in her tone. "And you are a bit young to be lookin' for a husband anyhow," she added.
“But what if I’m just wantin’ to get acquainted?” You asked, “Be kind and make friends?” you said as you began to pout.
“Clara, you already have tons of friends, honey pie,” Mama reasoned, “You’ve got your sisters, and Lisa, uh..." her voice trailed off as she looked to Daddy.
"Yeah, and the girls from school a-and your sisters-" Daddy began stating, having trouble coming up with enough names as reason not to befriend the Moores.
"I already said that sug'," Mama muttered awkwardly before turning back to you. "But Clara, don't go lookin' for trouble is all me and your daddy are askin'," she said, wearing a wear smile trying mask the worry behind her eyes. "Okay?"
"Okay." you nodded as your lips thinned out into a straight line.
"Nighty night babygirl," Daddy called out as you made your way out to the hallway.
Your shoulders slumped in defeat as you trudged back to your room. But then the loop hole within your parents wishes came to mind. If you made a friendly connection with Mr. Moore and kept your head on straight then there would be no trouble to steer clear of.
“Sisters, I’m deeming myself a genius,” you grinned as you swung your bedroom door open.
“It seems as though we’ve missed a couple chapters,” your older sister mumbled confusingly, glancing to Helen.
And that night, you went to sleep ready to start this friendship of sorts.
“Pretty little thang, ain’t she?” Stack chuckled, whipping around to look at his brother.
You had just walked out of the cafe with your father. Flowy dress on, heels clacking on the floor, and your soft flowery perfume lingered in the cafe a little after you left.
“Now you leave innocent girls like her alone,” Smoke warned as he pushed his brother towards an empty table. “Don’t wanna be getting caught up with men like her father-I’m tellin’ ya,” he warned sternly just as they both took their seats.
“I like a challenge,” Stack shrugged, looking down as he fixed his tie. Only to look back up and meet the judging eyes of his twin who was only a couple moments his senior.
But the all-knowing look written on Elias’s face wordlessly let Elijah know that he wanted to fuck around and find out. And that's exactly what the younger twin decided on.
