Summary: Clara and Stack meet once more in town. And over the next couple of days, they get to knowing each other quite well. Smoke thinks it's a bad idea to mix pleasure and business.
âHey there sunshine,â Stack called out coolly from down the aisle adjacent.
He watched as your head was practically on a swivel, looking for whose voice his belonged to. Once your eyes landed on him, Stackâs hand rose and waved, each finger bowed one at a time in a fluid motion.
A fluttering feeling set into your stomach, finally seeing the man that was in charge of your thoughts for the past couple of days.
âHiya stranger,â you beamed, shopping basket in the crook of your arm as you made your way over to him.
He took a mental note of the way you tucked your hair behind your ear nervously and how your lushes fluttered like a deer. Not to mention the wrist length lace gloves that matched your flower topknot hat. You seemed so dignified and lady like.
âCorrect me if Iâm mistaken miss but weâve met before, havenât we?â Stack asked smiling.
âNot officially but my father and I crossed paths with you when we was at the cafe a couple days back,â you recalled.
âHm, cause how could I forget a pretty face like yours?â Stack wondered aloud, making a pink hue rise to your cheeks.
âNow youâre doin too much..Mister..?â Your voice trailed off as your head tilted sideways in curiosity.
âElias Moore, and you is?â he replied.
"Clara Cooper," you introduced. "My daddy owns Cooper Mercantile Bank," you explained, not knowing that there was money signs blinked in Stack's mind at this information.
"Aah, he had a nice suit on, I figured he was a man of serious business"
"Nah, he's a big ole' teddy bear if you eva' meet him" you assured with a smile. "Say what brings you to Clarksdale?"
"Me and my brother got ourselves our own business venture," he explains "We from here but came back to upon up a juke join for folks."
"Aye Stack," Bo Chow whistles, pulling Elias's attention away from you. "I got them crates ready for ya now,"
"'Precciate' you, I'ma be over there in a second," "It was a pleasure putting a name to that sweet face, sunshine," Elias pressed his lips to the back of your softly, his facial hair grazing your skin.
He was just close enough for you to get a whiff of his bourbon scent. And you were just a close a distance for him to be reacquainted with your jasmine perfume.
"Pleasure was all mine Elias," you voice smooth as butter, the sound of his name rolling of your tongue felt like a tease.
As you turned yourself back towards the shelves, you heard him call out to you one more time. And with a smile, you twirled back around.
âYou should come tonight,â Elias offered, âSay you is there for Stack, aight?â
âMaybe I will,â you say bashfully, tucking your chin to your shoulder before watching him and Bo get the truck ready.
Letâs just say Clara Cooper had a bit of pep in her step during her afternoon stroll back home.
Excitedly, you sat tall on chair across from your vanity. With your hair nearly pinned into curlers and carefully applying your lipstick, your lips made a popping sound to spread the color evenly.
âHoney pie,â Mama said sweetly as she leaned against the bedroom door frame. âWhere you plan on goinâ lookinâ all pretty like?â she asked curiously.
âI wanna catch a talkie, one of emâ new ones,â you lied, the rest of your face catching up with the rosey pigment on your cheeks.
âYou going with anyone?â Mama asked with a hint of worry in her voice.
âI donât mind goinâ on my own,â you shrugged as you began removing the curlers from your hair.
Mamas' pointer finger tapped rhythmically against her chin until her eyes lit up with an idea. âWhy donât you take Joyce with you?â she suggested with a smile.
Your brows furrowed at this but ultimately you decided it would be best for your older sister to add to your alibi.
With a chirpy nod, you spun around to look at your mother with your unbrushed curls. The corners of your red lips curving into a somewhat passable and totally not mischievous smile.
âNow I donât mind that idea one bit,â you beamed, allowing whatever worries Mama had in mind be washed away.
Now the next challenge was to convince Joyce not to laze around the rest of the evening. You found your older sister snuggled up in the nook where Mama stores all the books in the house.
Joyceâs eyes did not even glance up from the book in her hand as you approached. So, you cleared you throat loudly for her to take notice.
âYes sister?â She asked, voice sounding uninterested already.
âI wanna go to the Mooresâ juke joint,â you whispered, your eyes looking around for your parents cautiously. âAnd I need you to come with me,â you added.
Your sisterâs eyes yanked from the words on the page and stared into yours in bewilderment. A small huff left Joyceâs chest at your words.
âNow why would I do that?â Joyce scoffed until her brows raised with realization. âItâs to see that man you keep telling us about huh?â She smirked.
âAnd if it is?â You retorted trying to be nonchalant. âI know Mama and Daddy wouldnât let me go so I said Iâd be watching a film!â you whisper shouted excitedly.
âLiar liar,â Joyce tutted as she waved her finger in the air. âBut I suppose I got time to chaperone your little date Clara,â she shrugged, shutting her book and placing it beside her.
âYou is a blessinâ Joyce!â You squealed, arms wrapped around your older sister.
âAlright alright, lemme get freshened up first,â she laughed at your giddiness.
Not long after sundown, You and Joyce arrived at Club Juke by foot. Only then did you feel your heart begin to race with excitement and nervousness settled into your bones.
The pair of you were greeted by a big man with a straw hat on. He stood up from his seat, his full stature towering over you and Joyce.
âHi there!â You waved, âWe's here to see Stack Moore,â you explained, the big man turned and looked into open doorway.
âHey Stack, some folks here for ya!â He hollared into the crowd.
Elias turned his attention away from his little cousin - Sammy and excused himself from their drunken conversation. Placing his beer bottle down at a nearby tabletop, Elias waltzed over to the front entrance of the mill.
Even in the pearl moon light, your eyes shined like the morning sun. Blinking slowly, he outstretched his hands to your sister first. To which Joyce extended her palm as well.
"I presume ya'll are sisters?" Stacked asked, shaking Joyce's hand before gently letting it drop back at her side.
"Indeed we are," Joyce nodded, linking her arm with yours proudly. "And you must be the man my sister chit chatters all day and night about," she teased as you pursed your lips bashfully.
"Twenty-four seven," Stack replied with a sly smile at the newfound information. "Happy to see you made it Sunshine," he said, pressing a quick kiss the back of your hand.
"Elias, I really hope you don't mind I brought Joyce here along," you say and he just shake his head as if you were talking all crazy-like.
"The more the merrier," he assures as he turns to the big man guarding the door. "These ladies s' with me Cornbread," he instructs.
"Welcome to Club Juke," Cornbread greets, tilting his hat to the two of you kindly.
The three of you made your way through the crowd and towards where the stage was, a band performed countless country blue hits. Joyce remained cemented against one of the support beams with her fan keeping the hot summer air out of her face.
Stack's eyes enjoyed watching as you took in the atmosphere. The warm air from all the bodies dancing around, the smell of alcohol and tobacco, and the music just engulfing your senses.
"I'm glad you came tonight," Stack says loud enough to be heard above the music but intimate enough for you only to hear.
You smiled as you breathed in deeply, hands moving fluidly through the air. This wasn't the first juke joint you've been to, but it surely wasn't about to be your last time at Club Juke.
"It would'a been rude for me to decline your invitation," you replied before Elias stepped a bit closer almost enough for you to feel his breath bounce off your skin.
Wordlessly, and almost like second nature, your bodies wrapped around each other. Your hands finding the back of his neck with his arms secured themselves around your waist.
Elias however felt something burning at the back of his head. His head turned to see Elijah at the second glaring at him intently. The elder Moore brother, in that moment, could only express his disappointment with a puff a smoke releasing from his cigar.
Before you could catch on, Stack turned his head back around and gazed deeply into your soft, innocent eyes. You soft lips gave him a smile that he would never forget for a hundred years. His chest brushed against yours as you both moved with the music.
In all truth, nothing could prepare Stack for a girl like you. The two of you looked like you were from different worlds on opposite ends of the universe.
Elijah's worn and scarred hands against Clara's floral linen dress. His toasty liquor breath rivaled your soft perfume. Your rose barrette and the gun resting on his hip.
Nothing about it looked close to right but the feeling in your chests begged to differ.
Over the succeeding days, You and Stack made a point to continue meeting. With the discussions and interactions nothing past flirtatious but the feeling inside continued to simmer. Just like a kettle inching towards its boiling point.
On this specific Saturday, you found yourselves at the end of one of the countless docks built on the tails of the bayou neighboring your house. Deep enough through the trees to not be easily spotted but clear enough to allow the sunlight to kiss your skin.
With shoes off, your legs swung off the end of the dock while Elias's head rested in your lap with his hat shielding his face from the sun.
"It sure is nice out today," you sighed contently, interrupting the buzzing bugs and the croaks of frogs resting on the water's edge.
"Good thang I'm spendin' it with you Sunshine," Stack mumbled which brought heat to your cheeks.
You observed how relaxed Elias was as he laid on top of your lap. His jacket was discarded and must've been somewhere else on the dock at this point. His white shirt unbuttoned down enough to allow the breeze to pass through. Which was also enough for your mind to wander just a tad bit.
Elias removed his hat from his face and placed it on his chest, making you wonder if he was reading your thoughts. You took in a breath hurriedly like a child being caught with licorice past bedtime.
"Look all you want," Elias chuckled when he noticed your wandering eyes. "I sure am enjoyin' the view." he licked his lips while his eyes flickered to your clothed breasts which slightly obstructed your face from where he laid.
You gasped and playfully swatted at his face with your palm. Overtaken by his boldness. Stack could only to continue to snicker as you turned away from him to regain your composure.
"Elias Moore!" You scolded like a grade schoolteacher. "Unbelievable." you shook your head with a laugh that came from the deepest part of your chest.
As you were lost in laughter, Elias searched lazily for his pocket watch to figure out the time. Upon reading the time, he shot up like a bullet and began collecting his belongings.
"Smoke is gon' have ma ass," he grumbled and he shoved his jacket on and began buttoning his shirt.
"What time is it?" you sighed as you rose to your feet, slipping on your shoes at a much more relaxed pace.
"Time fo' me to get all the catfish and grease. Gotta pick it up from the Chows' before closin' time." Stack rambled all too quick.
You smoothened out the pleats of your skirt then your hands moved to assess how your curls held up. Stack shuffled his shoes on in half the time and placed his maroon bowler hat back on his head.
"See ya later Sunshine," Stack grinned as he closed the distance between the two of you, the wood creaking with every step.
"Bye bye Stack," your voice once again smooth like the soft lapping water underneath your feet.
Stack seemed to hesitate for a moment as his name rolled of your tongue. And with one smooth move, he pulled you in by the waist. His strong hands finding their place at the small of your back. Your hands resting on his quite muscular chest.
The moment that played over and over in your mind was now happening right before your eyes. Elias took notice of how your breathing hitched the closer his face inched towards yours.
"E-elias..." you stuttered, not sure what else to say in that moment.
"Say the word n' I won't," Stack muttered quietly as he pulled away slightly. Your eyes batted slowly into his longing gaze.
Not even a sentence crossed your mind, let alone words to tell him to stop. But the silence killed Stack.
"Clara please," he yearned both scared for you to shoot him down and just wanting you to shut him up and kiss him.
He wondered if you were just as scared as him. Scared that love was just within his reach. It all seemed too easy to Stack, someone who had spent his entire life calculating every decision. Your heels left the ground as you put more weight on your toes, pulling Elias out of his thoughts and his lips down to meet yours.
Your first kiss was soft. And it felt like hours passed before pulling away for a mere moment. But just as you pulled away, Stack didn't know he needed you more than his lungs needed air-till he found himself reeling your back in for more.
