another sleepless night. even after exhaustion set in from his ordeal last night, his stupid brain would not shut up. did i make a mistake? should i have fought for her? he tried to shut it up; he did an interpretive dance for 'sleep', took another hot shower, drank warm milk and counted sheep, but nothing worked. he wanted to punch himself. great. never tap into emotions, mike. NEVER. that's what you get for not listening. fucking idiot.
daylight. after he decided there was no way he was falling asleep now, he checked his cellphone. 10am. rehearsal was starting at 1pm today... eh. might as well get up. he threw on some clothes, picked up his dance bag, and headed out.
a short walk and a subway trip later, he was at the 42nd street subway stop. it was still 2 and a half hours till rehearsal, and it was a nice day outside... he decided to walk the rest of the way, to join in on the millions of new yorkers enjoying the sun above ground. as he reached the surface and looked out at the busy street, a face stood out to him above the crowd.
millions of people. MILLIONS of people in the city, and he had the luck to run into the one person he didn't want to see. tina walked down the street, her hand in someone else's hand... elliot. she was smiling and talking animatedly about something, and elliot seemed engrossed in what she had to say. so, apparently, his plan had worked.
but seeing the fruits of his labor from last night didn't bring him joy, or relief. instead, he felt a punch in the gut, as everything suddenly came into sharp focus. what have i done? the one woman that he had ever loved, the only person he had let into his heart at the age of 16, was walking down the street in the arms (literally. elliot was hugging her now.) of another man. and he had basically placed her there. he had given her up, without a single fight. without thinking, he glanced at his watch (2 hours and 20 minutes until rehearsal) and followed the couple from a safe distance away.
they soon walked into macy's, right off of times square. he followed. he followed silently as she and elliot wandered about the mall, trying on jewelry and clothes, chatting non-stop. she bought a few nyc-themed baby items; for tanner and faith, no doubt. he checked his watch again (1 hour and 15 minutes till rehearsal). he had to leave soon, or he would be late for warmups. but he couldn't. was she truly happy? could there be even the slightest chance that seeing him would make her think about him again? should he take the chance? should he just leave?
tina and elliot were nearing a turn of the mall; without thinking, mike briskly walked through two clothing racks and place himself at the turn. he wanted to see her face. then he would know.
they turned, and an audible gasp escaped from tina. he turned, and looked straight into her eyes. all traces of laughter had disappeared from her face, and he saw her remove her hand from elliot's. elliot - 0, mike - 1. seeing her face brought back the lump in his throat from the night before. the mall was still filled with people, but he only saw her eyes. the mall was still loud and busy, but he only heard silence. he swallowed, and broke the silence with a simple "tina."
"mike," she said softly. she looked like she would burst into tears at any moment. he took it as a good sign. elliot - 0, mike - 2. he turned his head, and finally got a good look at this elliot. he was shorter than him elliot - 0, mike - 3. but was more built fuck... elliot - 1, mike - 3. he had a nice face: the face of someone who was used to getting his way; a smooth talker. mike didn't like it at all. he hated this man, the man who had taken over his role... whether he had given it to him or not. "and you must be... elliot" he spat out through gritted teeth, and stuck out his hand. elliot looked cool and composed, and accepted his hand without any look of discomfort in his eyes. elliot - 2, mike - 3. "so you're the great mike chang! i heard a lot about you..."
elliot was saying something, but mike didn't listen. he looked at tina once again. she seemed to be slightly shaking... he didn't know whether that was a good sign or not. he glanced at his watch (1 hour until rehearsal). he had run out of time, and wasn't sure if he had gotten the answers he was looking for.
"well, i have to head out, see you two around some other time" mike cut in, interrupting elliot's monologue. he then promptly turned, and walked out. he half wished for tina to come after him; to tell him that she still wanted him. but no one came.
