Dirty little secret time: Those scene of Chris and the Melissa from 6A just gave me some really nasty plotbunnies for the Stalliam AU. >:)
Melissa really, REALLY does not take well to finding out that one of the men she often trusted as a surrogate father-figure to her son has a life-calling devoted to hunting him down, and people like him.
(Spoilers below)
I think I mentioned before that in this AU, part of the devastation will come from the fact these two halves of a much larger family-like unit are being split in half.
Melissa trusted Chris as an almost surrogate father-figure to Scott. Chris had embraced this role, even giving Melissa a gun and some ammo, and showing both of them how to shoot it, when she's afraid Raphael was going to bother them again. It had been something of a bonding experience for them, Chris knowing a thing or two about a crazy ex-spouse waiting in the wings for the slightest weakness from you and looking to take your kid away. Chris has been the one to help Melissa change the locks on all the doors, too, and he'd been the one to help Scott through some of the tougher parts of puberty that boys really need a dad for.
When Chris hurts Scott, Melissa takes that gun and all that ammo, so furious that she really does intend to shoot him. The Sheriff stops her, but Chris almost wishes he hadn't, because Melissa instead throws the gun at Chris, "giving it back" and telling him she'll get a new one - her own one - to use against him if the McCalls need.
Chris was there for the McCall's grief and anger and fear when Raphael had nearly killed Scott, then finally left. He'd even stayed at that house on and off for a few nights, they'd been so scared, and every time one of their ex-spouses tried to cause trouble, it was always each other that they'd turned to.
Melissa calling Chris a bigger threat to her and Scott than Raphael ever was hurt far more than any bullet ever could.
The biggest irony for me about learning about the Sheriff's father in Season 6...
...is that this is exactly what I had planned for the Sheriff, anyway, in at least two of my fanfics.
It was going to be a thing in Everyone Has a Story that when the three parents are trapped under the Nemeton and Chris and Melissa are filling in the Sheriff about the supernatural world, they explain Gerard, and the Sheriff is basically all "I'm glad I kept Stiles away from his own grandfather, Jesus, Chris, your dad makes mine look like a saint, and that's REALLY saying something".
This was also going to be why none of the kids in the Stilinski-Argent AU really knew their grandparents. Chris, very obviously, didn't want Gerard near his kids, and the Sheriff's dad was going to be a homophobe.
I'm adding this subplot/background to Winter Wolves, now...
Welp, I guess we know Sheriff Stilinski's name, now. The question is, does it matter?
Honestly, I'm actually kinda miffed that the narrative gave us a name.
From almost any way you look at it, the best thing would've been to just leave it as a mystery, and it's not like the Sheriff's name was necessary for that particular line of dialogue to work.
But, we now have a canonical first name for the Sheriff:
Noah.
Half of me really wants to use canon and make it his name. The other half of me has been using 'John' for so long, I don't know if I can really make myself buy it.
I'm not going to retcon my previous fics and change his name, mostly because I really don't feel like going through the massive amount of editing it would take to do that. But, maybe in future fics?
The other option is to make Noah his 'official' first name, and John his middle name that he prefers to go by for one reason or another. Or maybe I can make it the other way around?
Noah Jonathan Stilinski, or Jonathan Noah Stilinski?
I'm pretty sure I'm not going to take the Stilinski-Argent AU all the way to Season 6...
...but if I did:
John raised an eyebrow Chris started unveiling all take-out they were having for dinner.
"This looks way too delicious to be healthy," he said with a grin.
"So?" Allison asked. "We can just go running."
Liam snorted, and John glared at both his kids. "Still, I can't believe anyone is letting me eat this."
Chris raised an eyebrow. "Well, why wouldn't we?"
John opened his mouth, but then paused. With a shrug, he said, "I actually don't know." With a shrug, he reached for the greasiest-looking bag, and tried not to wonder why it felt so weird that he had so much elbow room. "Let's eat!"
Okay, so I just got a weird idea or two for the Stilinski-Argent AU.
Just watched the Argent men in the sewers, confronting the Dread Doctors and finding all those bodies.
If it ever gets this far, I'm caught between having the Sheriff and Chris working together, two badass dads out to protect their kids (ALL THEIR KIDS!)
Or, instead of Chris down here with Gerard...it's the Sheriff. And he ain't happy about it, but he's desperate to do this, anyway.
Continuing down the Stilinski-Argent AU Rabbit Hole: Chris and Scott
One of my favorite things about Teen Wolf is Chris' growth, how he end up helping out and caring for all the guys who he started out hating (Scott, Derek, Isaac, etc.), and even ends up somewhat paternal towards some of them. His relationships with them is partially defined by these incredibly rocky starts.
In this AU, Chris has known Scott for years - almost as long as the Sheriff. I was trying to figure out if/how I can somehow keep Chris and Scott a little distant from each other to preserve that relationship...then realized I could do something even meaner.
Much like the Sheriff in canon and most fics, Chris - by virtue of knowing Scott for years - is quite paternal with him. While Melissa doesn't have any chemistry with the Sheriff or Chris, the three of them are almost unofficial co-parents. Where Melissa sometimes helped Allison through some puberty problems and was basically a maternal presence whenever Vic and Kate weren't around, both Chris and the Sheriff have helped her with Scott, since Rafael wasn't around.
Where Melissa helped Allison through her first few periods, Chris was the one who taught Scott how to shave. He often jokes that he counts on Scott to be the good influence on his kids, since they can be such trouble-makers on their own. When Melissa had to kick Rafael out of the house, Chris gave her a gun, and taught both McCalls how to use it, just in case.
So you can imagine how much it's going to hurt Scott when Chris, upon finding out he's a werewolf, turns his back on him.
